St. Paddy's Day Revelry
So this year, by the luck of temporal circumstance, New Orleans actually gets two St. Patrick's weekends, allowing the most dedicated revelers to celebrate uptown AND downtown in a single year. Great for fans of Guinness and those hoping for a double-shot of smiling (if bloodshot) Irish eyes.
If you spent last weekend celebrating early, you might want to partake in some of the live music opportunities that rev up on the official St. Patrick's day (Friday, March 17).
The folks at Kerry Irish Pub revs up the traditional Celtic music with Betsy McGovern starting at the almost-respectable hour of 3pm, and runs various acts until the crowd stops whoopin'. (Probably sometime Sunday morning?)
Meanwhile, over at O'Flaherty's Irish Pub will be whipping up plenty of old-school pub grub (Irish stew, shepherd's pie, fish and chips) to provide culinary ballast during the Saint's festivities. House act Drumbeg takes to the stage that night starting at 4pm.
Then, there are other Friday gatherings dominated by Irishness, real or imagined. Parasol's, Irish hub in the Irish channel, kicks off its St. Patty's day block party on Friday afternoon. And Jim Monaghan's annual Irish parade begins with drinks at Molly's at the Market. Wear green and toast with a whiskey before the 6pm marching time.
Early starts, but then, you can always consider it both a religious holiday (a day when everybody's Irish) and/or an early Friday happy hour.
Of course, if you've got a day job, you still might have to duck out of the office a bit early, but it's not quite as bad as taking a whole sick day for Gaelic tomfoolery, now is it?
