I don’t really know how to describe the feeling that one gets when going to see a show at the Howlin Wolf in New Orleans. I had the great pleasure of attending a fundraiser where the two featured bands were Rebirth and Trombone Shorty. What an experience, things kicked off around 10pm with a DJ, who could just read the crowd and knew what we wanted to hear. When Rebirth came on I could hardly stand still, Trombone Shorty followed and he just hypnotized the crowd. He literally played until he couldn’t breathe anymore. I would recommend the Howlin Wolf to anyone who is looking to have a good time, hang with friends and listen to good music.

Pros: Live Music, Friendly staff, Great Drinks, Feels like home

So they advertise the Rebirth Brass Band plays on Thursday nights @ 10. The wife and I decide to show up at 9:30, so that we get good seats. Good thing we did, because seating is VERY scarce. The pool tables, lighting, and decor are non-existent. The place was once a warehouse, and still looks like a warehouse, with a bar in the back and stage in the front. With the exception of a sound-board located in the middle of a large, bare floor, there were only about 6 bar tables and a total of about 20 bar stools. The atmosphere was what you would expect at a nightclub. The only difference - upper/middle crust people show up to see the Rebirth Brass Band. You can tell the regulars from the newbies. All us newbies showed up and grabbed a table, and chatted until the show started. At 10pm, they turn up the power on the amps and start playing club music, making conversation impossible. We all figured this was the intro to the Brass band. We waited, waited, and waited . . . all the while loud club music was playing. At about 11pm I go and ask the doorman if the Brass band was playing tonight, and he said yes, but they were running late. So we waited some more, while some fat, drunk/stoned black men stood up on stage and played DJ. By DJ, I mean stared at a laptop and played the Beyonce/50 Cent/Soulja Boy mp3s they got off of iTunes. They tried to get the crowd into it as if they were clubbing, but they weren't. They were all here to enjoy a brass band, not to shake their booties on the dance floor to bad rap music. So after about another hour of this extremely loud rap coming out of the speakers and fat black men speaking some form of stoner ebonics in the microphone, they FINALLY announce that the Rebirth Brass Band was in the building and would be coming on stage in 15 minutes. 10 minutes later (12:10am), the guy comes back on stage and says they'll be out in about an hour. At that point, us newbies got up and left, and were all denied a refund.

Cons: music, decor, atmosphere, location

I like this place and its bands that play there. Still promoting the old bands of years gone by, like the meters and nevilles, c'mon let some new blood get some light too! I saw a great cover band there called EchosHouse the bass player was very good and the girl singing had some chops too but its not the Nevilles, meters nor the radiators or Wooden Head, c'mon I know new orleans is old but try something new and give the new bands credit they need love too! Now don't think I hate the old bands cause I still love em all and The Wolf is the place to see the best of the Old and New! Peace out!
