Wonderful EVERYTHING

by nolafoodiegirl

This restaurant is the total package with flavorful food, fantastic atmoshpere and top notch service. I love this place! Shrimp Tchefuncte - a favorite. Turtle soup - excellent. The salad with fried oysters is superb. Just a few of my favorites that stick out.

Awful Experience

by kristenhayer

We just visited this restaurant tonight. Although we had a reservation at 8:30 it took 30 minutes to seat our party and another 30 minutes for our server to take our order. My dinner order was wrong, and the server argued with me about what I had ordered. Then, after another 20 minutes of waiting I finally had my order but my fellow diners with done with their dinners. We decided to stay for dessert, and I ordered a dessert wine. About 10 minutes after everyone else's desserts were delivered and they had started eating, the server informed me that they were out of the wine I ordered. Not only was there no acknowledgement that any of this was a problem, but nothing was comped on our bill. Lucky for me, I was the one paying the bill. This place was recommended by our hotel and we had great expectations. Big disappointment.

Dont go there if you want good food..

by djdiva

We happen to go there for Sunday Brunch and had to wait for a bit even though we made reservations.. it was very crowded and noisy. The "band" a two guy band was playing great music on the stairway and the service was ok.. It was a bit confussing to tell who was who!! We had too many people waiting on us. The apps were ok but somewhat dry. But the REAL KICKER was my dish.. I had a shrimp dish that had some sort of sauce, shrimp, and mushrooms.. BUT the rice after two take backs where CRUNCHY!! We had to tell a Mang that didnt work there but worked at Dicky Brennens.. and he brought my plate back with spagetti to try. He was great but the food was just not so.

Cant say that i would be back there at all. We have a Brennens here in Houston and this place is not like our Brennens here in Houston..

  • Pros: on canal
  • Cons: food was blahh!!

Worse Restaurant in New Orleans

by Bigkanunano

Don't bother spending your money. As a native New Orleanian, not worth the money. $5.00 per pea. Save your money and spend it at your favorite burger joint. This is NOT and I repeat NOT and NEVER will be New Orleans food. It's not creole it's not New Orleans and it's NOT edible. Wouldn't let me give ZERO Stars

  • Pros: It's in New Orleans on Canal Street
  • Cons: I didn't realize I had to pay for Air on my plate.

Best Meal Ever

by threefishes

I really enjoyed the Palace Cafe. The atmosphere is wonderfful, dress is casual, and the prices are reasonable. The crabmeat cheesecake is by far the most creative appetizer I have ever had. The andouille crusted fish was excellent. My coffee was hot and I enjoyed sharing my dessert with friends at the table. Next time I visit New Orleans, I will definitely dine at the Palace Cafe.

dreadful

by jkevs

The Sunday Brunch at the palace cafe was the worst experience of our trip to New Orleans recently. The service was terrible. It took forever to get coffee and to get cream was a struggle for the incompentent wait staff. The food was only barely ok after it did finally arrive 45 minutes after being ordered. Big portions but nothing special, enen a little bland tasting, definately not what you would expect in a New Orleans resturaunt. They have really bastardized the Brennans name in the place. So avoid this place at all costs unless you enjoy cold black coffee, rude staff and substandard food.

  • Pros: nothing
  • Cons: everything, especially poor service

Relaxing & affordable

by tailgateking

Not the best but certainly not the worst.

Wait staff was friendly but seemed tired from running up and down the stairs. The seating upstairs with a view overlookng Canal Street was nice.

Our food was enjoyable and reasonable based on the price. Beverage and wine selection also very nice and reasonable. For a nice casual/affordable/decent food dining location I recommend the Palace.

I will probably dine there again at Mardi Gras 2008. We Mardi Gras every year and my son and I ride in Endymion. Hail Endymion

  • Pros: Convenient to Quarter and downtown
  • Cons: Noisy, not a very romantic type of setting if you are loking for that.

Dreadful, give it a miss.....

by georgiegurl

From the surly hostess who couldn't smile let alone find you a table to the argumentative bartenders who ignored us for 10 mins and then fought over who was gonna serve us for the next 2 minutes to the absolutely ridiculous wait for a table, when there were countless tables available [at least 8 x 4 tops open].

The place was busy, at least on the ground floor, there was a game on but no management to speak of and the waiters were deplorable, forgot our order, couldnt clean the table in between, our kid knocked a full glass of wine over the table and we had to clean it ourselves and no-one offered to replace it at $10 a glass! The food was cold and dull...definitely a waste of time and money and well past it's sell by date this one.......we went after reading the NY times review of Ms Brennan today too bad they didnt go first!

  • Pros: right on canal and nice jazz band
  • Cons: dreadful food, no service and horrible management......

should have stayed away..

by tk0903

We went into Palace Cafe for Sunday Brunch at the suggestion of a local tour guide. The ambience was great, the decor upscale, and the live jazz band playing on the staircase very soothing. The service was initially very welcoming and warm. The staff was very willing to suggest other eateries upon inquiry. However, not long after we ordered, we spotted a huge insect (this website is not allowing me to insert the name, but use your imagination) on the wall just next to our table. By the time we brought this to our server's attention, it had disappeared into a hole in the wall and the server's response was simply an "O, I'm sorry." There was no attempt to move us to another table. The food wasn't all that great either. The snapper soup was incredibly salty and the eggs benedict was definitely not worth the price. After the meal, the server overcharged us by about $30 -- they apparently charged us for another table, but there was no apology or acknowledgement of wrongdoing on their part even though we had to sit for an additional 15 minutes as they sorted it out.

The food was mediocre and overpriced at best and the service inattentive.

My suggestion to other travelers is, do your research prior to traveling because your standards and expectations as a traveler may differ from the locals' standards. Citysearch's other recommendations for Creole, BBQ, and other local eateries were on the money!

This place is right next to the french quarter and has some really great dishes. Their gumbo is tasty as are their shrimp dishes.
