Very personalized service

by dream75517 at Citysearch

For my entire life, I've had my hair done by the same salon in New York. It was a Korean place, and the owner was a friend of my mom's. I love perming my straight hair, but with my salon in New York, that service was something to be desired. The curls were uneven, and my hair came out dry and crispy looking. No matter how many pictures I showed them, the results (1) looked nothing like the picture, but (2) always looked the same as all the previous perms. As I am in New Orleans for most of the year, I decided to look for a salon here. I remembered Steven Sobel from an InStyle magazine that featured them as the best salon in New Orleans to get a color treatment. I made an appointment with Ivonne, who has naturally curly hair herself. For a person usually left with a magazine while my stylist went to take care of another person, the one-on-one session was luxurious, if not a little disconcerting. I told her about my previous experiences, and for the first time, I was an active player in choosing the size of the rollers, where the curls began, and how it was done. From 2 until closing, I was the only customer, and I felt very taken care of. I asked for it to be more curly than not, and when it was done, it was a little too curly. She said it would loosen out and surely enough it did. I got so many compliments, by people who never complimented me when I had my previous perms- that says something, doesn't it?

  • Pros: Loved the results
  • Cons: Had to pay for some hair products put in after perm- though I was never asked, nor notified of extra price

Not good for guys

by DDLion at Citysearch

I walked into the salon and requested advice on what sort of styles and such would look good with my face and expressed a few concerns about my hair that I'd like to correct. Neither of these were addressed by the stylist. It seems as if she merely evened out and trimmed my hair without styling it and without regard to what my type of hair needed. I walked in there ready to pay any price for an excellent haircut, and walked out thinking it was overpriced (Even though $30 isn't that much). I guess they assume guys don't mind mediocre haircuts (or won't notice). I usually get my hair cut at Cuttin' Loose (where I will be returning) but had to try this place because of the raves. I was going to give this place 3 stars because it was OK, but the the casually racist comments by the stylist deserve a 1-star reduction.

  • Pros: Proximity to better salons, I've heard they do good color
  • Cons: Expected a more thoughtful haircut

ALWAYS a great haircut and fabulous color

by kathysautter at Citysearch

Steven has been cutting my hair for about 4 years now and I am ALWAYS happy with the cut. Monique does a wonderful job of my color and is always pleasant, upbeat and gives an incredibly relaxing shampoo massage! Everyone at the salon is clearly interested in making each of my visits a very positive experience. I'm so happy I found them!

The best NOLA salon for cut // color

by Babs 2 at Citysearch

After 20 years I can say that I have always received a consistently expert cut for baby fine hair and color is always spot on.....my hair never has that awful "dyed" look.

People cannot believe that I have such fine hair because Steven cuts it so well that it has so much body.

Monique and Kirsten are delightful -- both are very knowledgeable and talented.

The shop atmosphere is very inviting.

I recommend SSS to all!!

Orange hair is rad, man.

by Sweet tassels at Citysearch

I went to this salon thinking it was the BEST in New Orleans ( because of the great reviews) well turns out, they turned my beautiful blonde locks ORANGE! can you say OVER RATED... maybe if you are an average Joe or a plain Jane then this would be a good place for you. Never again. I could have done this BS myself with an at home kit. FU thanks for ruining my hair before my wedding little girls

  • Pros: not the end of the world, I guess.
  • Cons: waisting my time driving from Biloxi to NOLA to this shithol

Love my hair

by tlacs at Citysearch

thank you Kristen and Steven for the amazing coloring of my hair... You guys got it right on the money with the color i was going for .. Plus given that you had to correct the coloring and haircut that I had gotten from a previous salon, which was horrible (as you know). BUT Kristen and Steven thank you for correcting my hair and bringing life back into it.. I love love love my hair ..

Steven, i love how you just look at someones hair, facial frame, style, and personality and concoct a color and hairstyle that goes perfect for that individual. Kristen, i spent a couple of hours with you and you are a true perfectionist, you took time and great care with my hair and in turn it was perfect.. thank you guys Tess

see you again

Thank you kristen!

by Kelly86 at Citysearch

Today was my first visit to the Steven Sobel salon and though I was a bit timid about trying a new salon I have to say, I was VERY impressed. Both Steven and Kristen (my colorist) were very professional and took their time to help me correct my color. I will be returning to Kristen from now on, shes given me the best color experience Ive had in years. Also, Steven, thank you for being involved and for your concern. Most salon owners are too busy or too concerned with other things to stop and provide individual attention to their guests. Thanks again, I love my red hair!

Great color

by cole24 at Citysearch

Kristen K. did my color and did a great job of it. I wanted a tough color to get, silver, (and I have dark hair which makes it even harder to achieve) and she did a great job of getting it there. She also made sure to tell me to call and let her know how it was working out so she would know if the bleached hair really took the color or if it faded. I will definitely go back since I know she is so careful and adequate about color.
