Little Place, Big Flavor

by kokki

The food there is so great! Order anything on the menu and leave pleased. I witnessed a couple who attempted to dine WELL after the restaurant closed its doors. The chefs had already closed the kitchen. The lady (from the couple) begged on her knees for five minutes and asked the manager to reopen the store. I understood how she felt. It is definitely a go-to spot while in New Orleans.

  • Pros: Great Food, Affordable
  • Cons: Too cozy

DONT MISS IT

by drjohn1800

This is one of the best ever restaurants my wife and I have ever eaten. Although we are basically vegetarians this place is the one place we drop all our dietary guidelines and feast on their chicken livers. The vegetarian dishes are exceptional. Collards and fried okra are unreal. We plan to eat Thanksgiving Dinner there this year. Glad this one survived Katrina. I am almost reluctant to tell people about it, selfish I know but don't want it to get too famous and change. The servings are really huge too, always enough left over to bring our dog "Scooter". He loves it too.

  • Pros: Actually healthy Creole cooking, no lard used in vegetarian dishes
  • Cons: There is not one in my home town

Southern food at its best

by psu_upward_bound

I recently ate here with a group of 10 high school students and two other adults from Oregon on a trip to help rebuild. One of the students selected the restaurant from our travel book. I was surprised had how much they enjoyed the food - a few even polished off their bowl of "greens" (which all of the adults loved). Most got fried chicken and found it to be a substantial step up from Popeye's. I got the red beans and rice and found it to be delicious. On the whole, it was a positive experience.

  • Pros: Quick seating, large drinks (most with free refills)
  • Cons: Parking can be tricky

Basic Creole Fare - Yum.

by peachacid

We had...chicken, greens, rice, catfish, macaroni and cheese, and fried alligator sausage. All was really good. The chicken was not the best, but the rest was awesome. The catfish was breaded nicely and tasted good (even though I don't like fish; I tried some of the boyfriends'), the greens were plentiful and tasty, and the macaroni and cheese was cheesy and the pasta not too overdone. The prices are pretty good, and we were able to sit down immediately. The waitor was friendly, and the place was definitely well-liked by the people in it. It is a local-type place. We shared one praline for dessert and it was soooo good. I had never had one before, and I fell in love.

  • Pros: Gumbo good, praline pretty, food fine!
  • Cons: Weren't sure where to sit at first -- no signs.

Down-home cooking in a self-aware but friendly setting.

The Scene
There are no gray areas at Praline Connection--from the tiled floors and chairs to the plastic tablecloths, all is black and white. And the waitstaff, who wear black fedoras, aren't too shy to guide your ordering to suit your tastes. The restaurant also peddles souvenirs, so you can stay "connected" at home, whether that's in Metairie or Maine.

The Food
The menu is spicy and homey with offerings like crowder peas with okra and rice, red beans and rice, wonderfully stuffed bell peppers, and fried chicken. And, in fine tradition, portions are large. All meals come with a choice of mustard, collard or cabbage greens and a choice of red, white or lima beans or the crowder peas and okra. If you're not in the mood for spice, try the ribs--the meat falls off the bone and melts in the mouth.

One of the best in the world!

by techsailor

Having traveled the world over, living in the San Francisco Bay Area with great restaurants, and being a self-admitted food snob (I have a Chinese stomach), Im not easily won over. Nevertheless, Praline Connection amazed me. The service was decent but the food was excellent. My wife and I have the fried platter and the bbq platter. Here is my opinion: (1) Best Fried Chicken I ever had I want to know how they got the skin just right and how they are the meat so soft, moist and tasty; (2) Best Fried Fish I ever had it just melts in your mouth with all the flavors; (3) almost the best ribs I ever had bite into the ribs and the meat falls off full of flavors; and (4) Best Bread Pudding. Praline Connection is by far one of the best New Orleans restaurants in our experience.

  • Pros: Best Fried Chicken, Best Fried Fish, Best Bread Pudding

New Orlean's best!

by JBHapgood2

I had the catfish filet. I eat fish everywhere I go, and this is the best catfish I've ever eaten! It was so moist and tender, and had a delightful taste. The location was superb and the interior was homey, comfortable, and pleasant. It's a must-visit!

Fabulous Fare

by jenna5

I am shocked and amazed someone would give this wonderful restaurant a poor review. It is my favorite place to eat in the entire city when I visit. The portions are more than hearty, the food delicious, and the staff attentive. A+!
