Inconsistent with Food Presentation and Flavor

by ilovedining

I was introduced to La Peniche by a friend on the afternoon of December 26, 2008. I ordered a turkey sandwich. I was surprised to see that my sandwich was beautifully made, cut in fours with toothpicks and shaved turkey. The order even came with French fries. I also ordered the Ooey Gooey Cake which was wonderful! The food was delicious and I was so full that I had to go home and take a nap. Not to mention, the customer service was impeccable.

I was so excited about going to La Peniche again that I told my boyfriend about it. We decided to go to La Peniche in the evening of January 2, 2009. Our server was very personable and friendly. We ordered Shrimp Po-Boys. When we received the order, the bread was burnt on the insides and the shrimp was flavorless. I was very disappointed with the order so I asked the server to take away my plate. I reordered the delicious Turkey Sandwich which I ordered just a week before, expecting it to look just the same. I was shocked when I saw a sandwich that could have easily been made by a child. It was not cut in fours, nor did it have the same shaved turkey that was given to me only a week ago. In addition, I did not receive French fries with my order. My turkey sandwich was not ?dressed?no mayonnaise? as I requested. My boyfriend wanted some condiments to go on his po-boy but it took a while for a server to get back to us. He ended up having to go to the counter himself to get ketchup.

As a cook myself, I understand that restaurant dining is 90 percent visual: the food tastes better when it looks good. Unfortunately this second outing at La Peniche has proven to me that the restaurant lacks consistency. I will not be returning to La Peniche and will tell everyone that I know about my experience there.

  • Pros: The servers are very nice
  • Cons: Inconsistent with food presentation. Food lacked flavor.

An all-night mainstay full of character--and characters.

by Contributor

The Scene
Cramped and comfortable. The whimsical decor leans toward the pleasantly eccentric, which fits the overriding style of La Peniche's Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. Fastidious gay men rub elbows with college couples, retirement-age neighborhood residents, drag queens and families. Late nights, especially weekends, bring tourists and locals looking to allay impending hangovers with comfort food, as well as a certain see-and-be-seen element.

The Food
The half-pound hamburger is one of the better-kept secrets in town, highlighting a menu of simple, stalwart options such as pork chops, chopped sirloin and chicken-fried steak. New Orleans-centric dishes like red beans and rice are serviceable, but a stray off the beaten path for a shrimp omelet will yield deeper rewards for seafood-lovers. A selection of homemade desserts evokes memories of Grandma's house; the Oreo pie is a sublime alternative to the standard, though quite good, cheesecake.
