It's famous
by sara226
The muffaletta was good and the place is cute in a dirty and dingy kind of way. The guys behind the counter are some of the most unhappy looking people I've encountered in a while. What was surprising to me was that after I ordered my sandwich, I saw swastikas tattooed on the knuckles of the guy who was ringing up my order. If I hadn't been showing a guest from another country the city, I'd have canceled my order. In fact, now I regret that I let that sway me.
- Pros: good muffelettas
- Cons: the staff
From the mouth of babes
by RobandClaire
And when I asked my 5 year old granddaughter what she wanted for her upcoming birthday she told me how last year she remembered having the best sandwich in the world while in New Orleans and how friendly the "sandwich man" was and how high the stools were that she sat on. She asked for me to take her back again for another sandwich. Yes, Central Grocery--introducing yet another generation of my North Carolina family to this "must do" place while in New Orleans! Thanks, guys!
- Pros: Birthday presents
I love this place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by BigBadJohnny
I only get to New Orleans about once every 5 years, and this is usually the first stop I make when I get to the French Quarter.
We were there at the beginning of January and had to wait in a short line to get a muffuletta It was worth every second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the atmosphere in the grocery, and the guys working there always make us laugh.
It just doesn't get any better or more "New Orleans" than Central Grocery for this Texan!!!! They would get 6 stars from my family if it were an option!!!!!
- Pros: The muffuletta is God's perfect sandwich!!!!!!!!!
- Cons: The waits can be a little long on a busy day, but it's worth it.
worst customer service ,don't waste your time or money!
by killernoir
i agree with cajun2008, the customer service here is horrible! I stopped going here years ago-you never get a hello, a welcome, a thankyou- you get nothing but unfriendly arrogant faces-and the sandwich isn't all that much to write about . i got better in my italian aunts kitchen. i can order just about any product they have in thier store online, never have to leave my house and get better ,friendlier customer service from an online food company. don't bother stopping in here, there is nothing that they sell that is so special or anything unique about this place that you can't get somewhere else with a smile.
- Pros: nothing
- Cons: worst customer service, over priced ,over rated!
BIG DISSAPOINTMENT AT CENTRAL GROCERY-OUT OF MUFFALETTAS!!!!!!!!
by KBranco
Not the best Muffaletta, especially when you can't get one because they're out of bread!!!! What are you famous for and you can't keep bread on hand??? We were there on Saturday, December 27th and were told they were out of bread. We were all very upset and the owner had the nerve to tell my husband that "IT'S JUST A SANDWICH, DON'T KNOW WHY YOU'RE SO UPSET". He doesn't know or care how many people visit his fine city and look forward to one of his sandwiches-I'll tell you what-we won't be visiting his store again and we'll tell everyone we know from Louisiana to Virginia just how poor his customer service is!!!! Thanks to the fine staff at K-Paul's we've found a new Muffaletta source!!!
Worst Customer Service

I'm a local customer who has never seen anyone at this business give any type of great customer service. I have never seen any of the owners and staff that work there ever smile while assiting customers. They never say hello or "Thank You" for your business. Yes, the muffalettas are good, but please appear to be happy about the product your are selling.
I just wish they treated thier customers with a warm and gracious greeting and a little "Thank You" when you complete your transaction. I have never once gotten any of this from anyone at Central Grocery. I don't see how they have been in business for over 100 years if this is how they have always treated thier customers.
Original and Best Mufellatta
by jacobgarza44
Absolutely the best Mufellattas in the world. They invented them, so how on earth could they be wrong? The person writing about cheap ingredients and saving money is way off base. One couldn't be more insanely ignorant about a classic culinary creation.
- Pros: Great tasting, and highest level of satisfaction
- Cons: Theres only in New Orleans
Save your money! Go some place else!
by javergel
As a local New Orleans resident, this was once a great place to grab a bite to eat, but it has forgotten that it's the locals that made it famous. This place has replaced the high quality foods it once used with boiled ham, swiss cheese, and stale bread. The olive salad isn't the old recipe, but a cheaper one. They have cut corners every which way and rasied prices to boot!
- Pros: Good local groceries and spices for sale inside.
- Cons: No parking, poor food quality, pre-made by the dozens, not enough seating, high prices, no restrooms, no place to wash your hands, no place for the employees to wash their hands.
"The" Muffuletta Shrine!
by jaymaygm
Do not visit NO, without going to Central Grocery. I don't know how many years it has existed, but it is the home of the Mufuletta. Philly has the CheeseSteak, Memphis, the BBQ, but the Muffuletta rules here. We just usually get a half, and waddle back to our hotel for an afternoon nap. The store has a very large selection of gourmet goodies to take back to your hometown. Always crowded, and fun. Love it!
- Pros: World's Best & Original Muffuletta! New Orleans Tradition!
- Cons: Very Crowded, But Very Fun!
