Best Margarita EVER + good food

I'm from LA and drink my fair share of margaritas, so first off, I've gotta say that I still think about the Taqueros margarita. It was GOOD.

The food was wonderful. I think a lot of people have rather limited expectations of what Mexican food is, this restaurant is creative and playful and very clean-tasting in its food. It reminds me of a book of Mexican cuisine my mom had, that I would spend hours looking at as a kid - the food we ate at home was New Mexican, but that book had regional cuisines from the heart of Mexico, with influences of all the cultures (including French as well as the native ethnic influences) and the food at Taqueros reminds me of that. Don't go there expecting your favorite corner Mexican place, go there for the Mexican equivalent of NOLA or some other high-cuisine expression of the food.

Being from San Diego, my wife and I are still stunned that we paid this much for Mexican food and shocked at the total lack of any Mexican flavor in any of the dishes. We started with the $8.00 red snapper ceviche which was more like Pico de Gallo with a few bits of red snapper thrown in so they could call it a "ceviche". We moved on to the $5.00 house salad which brought back memories of the salad the lunch lady served me in elementary school. Then the entrees, the $22.00 Chile Relleno with Lamb for my wife and I had the$16.00 pork Chilaca, which was described as a fajita style dish. The lamb was mushy and resembled roast stuffed into a Chile Relleno with a slice of melted cheese with a reduction sauce that tasted like the lame Sangria my wife ordered. The pork Chilaca was nothing more than slices of tough, dry pork meat with sauteed onions, a side of black beans and rice with absolutely the worst corn tortillas ever. I can get better corn tortillas at Sav-U-Center.

Although the service and atmosphere was fine the food was horribly bland and pricey. We cannot remember the last time we wasted money like this for a meal. We will never be back.

DISSAPOINTMENT

I used to visit the chef's restaurant when he was in Kenner on Roosevelt. The Food quantity was still small - but the prices weren't as high. Living down the street from the restaurant - I had visions of quickly becoming fat and poor - due to my planned frequent visits. I ate at the downstairs restaurant and was shocked to see a decent maragarita for $10. I stuck with the $6 house margarita - and it tasted like something from a fraternity party. I ordered the grilled cheese appetizer with chorizo. It was very good, very fresh - and very small. For $15 I got a watered down tasting margarita and an appetizer - and was still hungry. I doubt I'll visit again - and the whole experience was extremely dissapointing.

Not the most quiet resturant

Newly opened Taqueros on St. Charles avenue is in a great location, eaisly accesable by street car, and Its got a great style for indoor dining. I found the food to be a bit high priced, and average tasting. menu isnt that big either. Its a traditional Mexican resturant, not your typical Tex-Mex. Also inside its quite loud. You walk in to a large square room with wood floors and in the far back you see a typical open kitchen hidden by a half walk. With all the noise from the kitchen, plus a room full of guest's conversation bouncing off of the floors and walls, it makes it quite hard to hear the person sitting across from you. I hope the get smart and add some booths or some sort of partitions in the near future. Overall an average dining experience.

OVERPRICED

The quantity of food for lunch for the prices was below par. My husband and I decided to split a dish since the average price was $14. We were given two small tortillas each and barely an entire chicken breast chopped up for the bargain price of $14. And, a side of pico de gallo with four chips for $5. The food was mediocre, but the prices are definitely not worth even mediocre food. Either bulk up the quantity or lower prices!!

Real Latin Food

Don't bring your Boudreaux appetite. But if you enjoy food that is pleasing to the taste and eyes, then this is definitely the place for you. A little pricey, but definitely worth it. The salsa is good, and the Chili Rellenos is excellent. Highly recommend the Sangria. Overall, I really loved the food and atmosphere.
