Something Different

We went to Upperline for Valentine's Day and we were not disappointed. The turtle soup was excellent, the duck was succulent and delicious and the dessert was heavenly. If you are looking for a cozy atmosphere and a different twist on the New Orleans style cuisine, you won't be disappointed!

The Scene
Another of New Orleans successful "house restaurants," Upperline is at once refined and instantly approachable. The crowd runs the gamut, from street clothes to dressy, from neighborhood locals to tourists on pilgrimage.

The Food
As one of the pioneering contemporary Creole restaurants, Upperline constantly reinterprets Louisiana classics with an eye on lively flavors and homegrown authenticity. Chef Ken Smith presents Creole dishes that are at once refined, hearty and satisfying. The silky oyster stew is perfumed with a hint of anise-flavored Herbsaint and a blast of bright, peppery watercress. Smith also maintains the legacy of the restaurant's legendary Chef Tom Cowman alive with a perfectly crisp, meltingly tender roast duck served with sweet ginger-peach sauce.

San Francisco Foodie

I researched restaurants in NOLA and made sure we hit some of the best .. Bayonna, Peristyle, etc. Upperline was a bit disappointing. The high point was the Owner, JoAnne who stopped by our table and chatted with us and made us feel totally welcome ... she is delightful. Our waiter was new and there were rough edges and the food was good but not great .. we ordered the wine with each course and it came much slower than the food. The signature duck was so so .. dry and old tasting the sauce just tasted like peach preserves. The gumbo and turtle soup were also not the best I tasted in NOLA. Our favorite dish was the pecan pie ... it was SUPERB. My husband was very happy so perhaps I just ordered the wrong menu (the Lousiana Tasting Menu)

• Cons: Service uneven, Food did not delight

We will be back

On our first trip to New Orleans, we had heard many great things about this restaurant, and we were not let down at all. we highly recommend making reservations before you get there. We were there during the Garlic Festival. My whole meal including dessert had garlic in it. The whole meal was magical and very romantic.

the real New Orleans experience

I have eaten at all the "top" restaurants in New Orleans--Emerils, Commander's, etc, but I cannot seem to forget the experience I had at the Upperline. The owner, Jo Ann Clevenger, made the dining experience remarkable....she is an upbeat and sincere individual who clearly goes out of her way to get to know each and every one of her guests....Her laugh and smile, mixed with an assortment of INCREDIBLE food and wine keep me coming back year after year....ps: I recommend the pecan pie!

We were there in December and had a great dinner.

The duck is just out of this world. The service is very helpful and knowledgeable on their menu and wine list.

Instant Classic

Upperline is one of the best restaurants we have dined at in New Orleans. I would highly recommend dining here to anyone and everyone.
