No Longer "ALL OF THAT!".
Like many things these days ... the portion and quality of the sandwich has greatly suffered ... and of course, there have been significant cost increases throughout the past 17 years that I have been going there.
Yes, they used to be "THE PLACE" to get a muffuletta, hands down ... but they can't claim that noteriety any longer!
One thing that is for sure and hasn't changed at all in all these years ... And that is the RUDEST staff/employees anywhere in the world. This has been consistent throughout the years and I guess I should be thankful for that!
Way too many other places in The French Quarter and the surrounding area to waste your time and your money, but I know habits are hard to die and to many having a Central Grocery Muffuletta is much more than just having a sandwich ... It's somewhat about the overall experience. For me, when I go in to the store, my mind is flooded with memories of times and experiences shared with friends over the sandwich ... IT is NO LONGER about the sandwich ... It's still worth a visit if you overlook the employees!
Don't waste your money. Forget about trying to give them your money. They are rude and treat you as if they don't need your business... whether that's true or not, you should always make your customers or potential customers feel appreciated and welcome. There are plenty of other places to enjoy great food and amazing service. I can assure that they will never see another dime of my money again. I'm somewhat relieved to see that there are a number of other people who have had the same experience. What a shame... for Central Grocery.
Thought I'd died and gone to heaven!. I LOVED the selection of Italian coffees, pastas and cookies! And OH, the spices! Next time I'll bring an empty suitcase just for the shopping at Central Grocery!
It's famous. The muffaletta was good and the place is cute in a dirty and dingy kind of way. The guys behind the counter are some of the most unhappy looking people I've encountered in a while. What was surprising to me was that after I ordered my sandwich, I saw swastikas tattooed on the knuckles of the guy who was ringing up my order. If I hadn't been showing a guest from another country the city, I'd have canceled my order. In fact, now I regret that I let that sway me.
From the mouth of babes. And when I asked my 5 year old granddaughter what she wanted for her upcoming birthday she told me how last year she remembered having the best sandwich in the world while in New Orleans and how friendly the "sandwich man" was and how high the stools were that she sat on. She asked for me to take her back again for another sandwich. Yes, Central Grocery--introducing yet another generation of my North Carolina family to this "must do" place while in New Orleans! Thanks, guys!
I love this place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I only get to New Orleans about once every 5 years, and this is usually the first stop I make when I get to the French Quarter.
We were there at the beginning of January and had to wait in a short line to get a muffuletta It was worth every second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the atmosphere in the grocery, and the guys working there always make us laugh.
It just doesn't get any better or more "New Orleans" than Central Grocery for this Texan!!!! They would get 6 stars from my family if it were an option!!!!!
worst customer service ,don't waste your time or money!. i agree with cajun2008, the customer service here is horrible! I stopped going here years ago-you never get a hello, a welcome, a thankyou- you get nothing but unfriendly arrogant faces-and the sandwich isn't all that much to write about . i got better in my italian aunts kitchen. i can order just about any product they have in thier store online, never have to leave my house and get better ,friendlier customer service from an online food company. don't bother stopping in here, there is nothing that they sell that is so special or anything unique about this place that you can't get somewhere else with a smile.
BIG DISSAPOINTMENT AT CENTRAL GROCERY-OUT OF MUFFALETTAS!!!!!!!!. Not the best Muffaletta, especially when you can't get one because they're out of bread!!!! What are you famous for and you can't keep bread on hand??? We were there on Saturday, December 27th and were told they were out of bread. We were all very upset and the owner had the nerve to tell my husband that "IT'S JUST A SANDWICH, DON'T KNOW WHY YOU'RE SO UPSET". He doesn't know or care how many people visit his fine city and look forward to one of his sandwiches-I'll tell you what-we won't be visiting his store again and we'll tell everyone we know from Louisiana to Virginia just how poor his customer service is!!!! Thanks to the fine staff at K-Paul's we've found a new Muffaletta source!!!
Worst Customer Service.
I'm a local customer who has never seen anyone at this business give any type of great customer service. I have never seen any of the owners and staff that work there ever smile while assiting customers. They never say hello or "Thank You" for your business. Yes, the muffalettas are good, but please appear to be happy about the product your are selling.
I just wish they treated thier customers with a warm and gracious greeting and a little "Thank You" when you complete your transaction. I have never once gotten any of this from anyone at Central Grocery. I don't see how they have been in business for over 100 years if this is how they have always treated thier customers.
Original and Best Mufellatta. Absolutely the best Mufellattas in the world. They invented them, so how on earth could they be wrong? The person writing about cheap ingredients and saving money is way off base. One couldn't be more insanely ignorant about a classic culinary creation.
