run, do not walk, away – I have visited New Orleans at least twice a year since 1996. Because there are SO many great places to eat, it took me until 2011 to try Montrels. After the experience I had, I can only guess that the reason they stay in business is because they have a never-ending supply of new tourists who try it once and never return.
The food is not authentic in any way. The gumbo is like watery soup. The Shrimp Creole was also watery and bore no resemblance to the real dish, and the shrimp were mushy and smelled badly. The server's apron was filthy and covered with spills. The upstairs bathroom was horrid.
Please, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.
WORST FOOD EXPERIENCE -- EVER!! – DO NOT EVER EAT HERE, PERIOD. NEVER!!
We were simply trying to satisfy our cousins' desire for some great cajun food. Sadly, we were on the wrong end of town for that. Sadder still, we entered this place.
My wife saw the HUGE street sign advertising "FULL BAR, SPICY BLOODY MARY'S" so we went in. The "street cryer'" out front should've been a warning sign...but we were hot, tired, hungry and with kids.
We were seated in an almost empty dining room, while, oddly, the patio was fairly crowded. It took forever to get waited on. There appeared to be absolutely NO ONE in charge of the place at all.
My wife orders water for everyone and 2 large Bloody Mary's. She was told "we don't have a bar". My wife replies "you're kidding?". The waiter (coldly): "No, we don't. We don't serve alcohol." (THAT should've been our second sign!) Stranger still...there IS a "bar...with bar glasses hanging from the ceiling...and barstools...but no liquor!!
One of my kids ordered chicken strips (tough, weird taste) and fries that were "warm" at best. My other child ordered a shrimp Po'Boy (shrimp were cold, we sent them back and they came back "warm").
My wife and I ordered "bowls" of "gumbo" and "crawfish bisque". This dump's "bowl" is MAYBE a child's cereal bowl size! Ok, first, the gumbo was indescribably chaulky, scorched and horrible and we KNOW gumbo as we've prepared it often for over 23 years at home. The "bisque" is best described as beige-colored greasy, gravy...with grease "pool's" floating on top. One bite (why did I do that??) and I refused to eat it.
My cousins both got "jambalaya"...which was basically cold "Mexican-type rice" - with (maybe) sprinkled cajun seasoning (?), 3 shrimp and some God-awful "sauce" on top. (????). One of the plates was cold.
Like other reviewers on this and other sites, we, too, continuously saw plates of "fresh" sliced bread being "rushed" past us to destinations unknown. NEVER were we offered bread the entire time.
After complaining about the "bisque", the charge for that was removed from the bill. The ENTIRE bill should've been removed from the bill!
Needless to say, none of us came close to finishing the meal (thank God).
I paid with cash, because, quite literally, I would've been scared to death to give these people a credit card, if you know what I mean. And from some of the other reviews I've read, I'm glad I did not.
We were a party of 3 adults and 3 children...yet a whopping 20% tip was ALREADY added to the bill!!
When we left the restaurant, my wife pointed out the "bar/Bloody Mary's" sign to the street barker for the restaurant. His reply? "Ma'am I already asked them to change the sign and got my head chewed off." When she told him the sign was a lie, he said "I know that ma'am...but I ain't in charge of this mess..."
This place gives the appearance of an establishment operated by temporary employees with no supervisor/manager. It also reminds you of some bad movie where, in the plot, a group of folks with no knowledge of food whatsoever, "takes over" a closed/abandoned restaurant site and "set's up shop" as a "restaurant", albeit thinly veiled, the further you venture inside. It literally has that feel to it.
If this review doesn't steer you away from this God-awful abomination and French Quarter blight, then you deserve what you get.
The Good and The Bad – My husband and I went to Montrels Bistro in New Orleans on July 16th for lunch and July 17th for Breakfast. The lunch we had was wonderful. Our waiter for lunch was an elderly gentleman and he was outstanding. The shrimp Creole and jambalaya was outstanding. So we decided to try them for breakfast. That was a terrible mistake. We were seated and ask for coffee, took a while to get it and when we did it was cold and waiter did not bring any cream or spoons. We had to stop someone to ask for the creamer and a spoon. We ordered the shrimp Creole omelet since the shrimp creole for lunch had been so good. Mistake number 2. The omelet was very very small and mostly onion and green pepper, maybe 2 shrimp and a small spoon of sauce on top. The grits that came with it were cold, lumpy and bland, no salt or butter. We were never offered any type of toast or bread or butter. But did see one table that had toast and biscuits. Ask for more coffee and it was still cold. Noticed several people leave because they never got their order. Wish we would have left. Would not recommend
Best waiter ever – the food was good but the service was amazing!! Alvin is the greatest waiter. He is so sweet and friendly. he was the most welcoming and hospitable waiter. if you go there ask for Alvin personally. I came with my law school friends... twice! if I had more time I'd go again!
Best server ever! – I'm from New York and my law school friends and I went to Montrel's over spring break... twice! The food was good and the service was AMAZING. We went all around the French Quarter and never had better service.
Our server was named Alvin. He is the BEST waiter I have ever met. He was friendly, informative, and helpful. My friend wasn't sure if she could eat the craw fish because she couldn't eat spicy food, and he brought out one crawfish for her to try!
We had crawfish boil, mac and cheese, jambalaya, etoufee... all delicious
The one criticism I do have is that the crab cakes I had were very salty. I don't know if it was the breading or the seasoning of the crab itself... but it was very salty.
If you ever go there, ask for Alvin.
Worst Restaurant I've Eaten At In New Orleans – My wife, daughter, son-in-law and I ate at Montrels Bistro in New Orleans on Sunday 09/13/09. We ordered a platter of boiled crawfish as an appetizer which was suppose to be 3 lbs per our server and could not have been more than 1 lb or 1 /1/2 lbs when served. Upon peeling the crawfish it was obvious that they had been previously frozen. Son-in-law ordered beef filet which was suppose to be 10 ounces according to the server and the menu and when served it could not have been more than 3 or 4 ounces of beef. We complained about the poor portion size of the beef to the server and told her we wanted to speak with someone about this, but no one ever responded to us. My wife and I ordered crawfish etouffe which tasted as if it had been prepared by pouring salt into it. It tasted terrible! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY EATING AT THIS RESTAURANT!
