Editorial Review for Tropical Isle Toulouse – by Kevin Forest Moreau
The Scene
Jimmy Buffett may have opened his own club over on Decatur (the Margaritaville Cafe), but on any given night, you're more likely to find loyal parrotheads hanging out at one of these two French Quarter establishments. That's because both Tropical Isles are much closer in appearance and spirit to the kind of club one of Buffett's characters might actually frequent--or even own.
The Draw
Its biggest claim to fame is the trademarked Hand Grenade, a powerful concoction whose cartoon symbol (a drunken hand grenade) adorns a multitude of merchandise, from T-shirts to condoms. If fans can't have the real McCoy, they'll settle for the next best thing--local musician Al Miller is billed as the "Cajun Jimmy Buffett," and he frequently performs solo or with his band, Late as Usual, at the Toulouse location (the Bourbon Street outpost features weekend music as well).

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoLocal funk icon John Gros often holds down a solo spot at the Toulouse location. The Bourbon location plays host to groups such as Debi and the Deacons as well as the Bayou Parrots Band.

If you want to start the night right-get a handgrenade and do a jello shooter from a giant syringe! Hurricaines(the drink)are great if you just want to cool off but if you want a buzz-the handgrenade is the WAY! The place is crowded but you can actually get in and get a stool. Dance with the giant handgrenade dude but remember to tip him! If you don't he will remind you.
Pros: good drinks
Cons: bathrooms

Jimmy Buffet fans will wet their pants. Order a Hand Grenade if you can stand to drink Midori and do not mix with any other liquor. You will puke. ½ Hand Grenade will blow your mind. Live cover band.
