Beware of this place - Mr. John's Steak House.
We were greeted by a condescending matre'd who at 5 PM and 2 other people asked "do you have reservations?" She then proceeded to see where she could put us in this empty restaurant. My friend asked if we could be seated next to the window and she said no, all those tables were reserved. We have yet to see anyone come in for them.
We ordered a steak and salad - after 30 minutes we got a limp, blob of a salad that obviously the lettuce and romaine had gotten frozen in the refrigerator and when it thawed it was all limp. My friend had a Caesar and I had head lettuce with blue cheese - a 2 inch wedge with a blob of blue cheese dressing and limp - all for $10. My tea was so weak it looked like tinted water.
The manager came over and refused to take any responsibility for an inedible salad and wss very defensive.
We waited another half hour eating 3 baskets of toasted French bread. It ws not bad and finally our steaks arrived. They had a CRUST of pepper. I like pepper but this was overkill. By that time we were so hingry we just scraped off as much pepper as we could and ate them.
This is not an inexpensive restaurant - go to Ruth Chris - price is comparable and enjoy A GOOD MEAL BUT SKIP THIS RIP-OFF. My steak was $37 so its not cheap.
A word to the wise is sufficient.
Wouldn't do it again
New Orleans
Great Hotel BUT.... It's a great hotel but if any of you are looking to save some $$ then book it at referer.us/8/GoodHotelDeals They usually have some pretty good deals on there!
"Fantastic!". This is one of our very favorite places to dine while in New Orleans. The ambiance is wonderful, the food fantastic and the service is beyond reproach. I always recommend this restaurant to friends visiting New Orleans.
Perfect Tenderloins. We (my wife and I) both had the Filet Mignon, and we were extrmely pleased. The service was dead-on, and the side dishes were also very good.
The best meal I've had in town. So, I have to admit that I am not a meat eater, but apparently the meat is very good. I had lunch there, and had a wonderful wine, paired with very good calamari, and an eggplant parm, which really wasn't like anything I'd had before, but very very good. I was SO happy with my meal, I couldn't wait to go home and tell my boyfriend so that we could plan our dinner there. We're going there tomorrow. Highly recommended. Yum.
A menu yearning for more battles against hotel restaurant ambience..
The Scene
Sit by the window, that way you can gaze out over St. Charles Avenue and watch streetcars pass rather than be reminded you're eating in a hotel dining room. The Avenue Plaza is a plenty nice boutique sleepover, but Mr. John's put-on atmosphere of dark-stained walls and hand-me-down photos never really shakes the hotel restaurant stigma.
The Food
For a solid meal steps from the streetcar or your hotel room, Mr. John's suffices. A varied menu offers lots of options, but the emphasis is on broiled prime steaks and local-flavored seafood. The beef selections, which include every imaginable cut, are all superlative. A la carte sides and mega-size salads do their jobs. Seafood dishes such as fried platters and barbecue shrimp make decent introductions to New Orleans cooking. Daily lunch specials are a midday plus.
Where to go for a great steak.
My husband was craving a steak after we had 5 days of seafood dinners. Research several
web sites for local steak houses and this one was a real winner. Atmosphere was cozy. Staff was friendly and attentive. Best steaks we have had in a long time.
New Orleans' Best Kept Secret!. Mr. John's Steak & Seafood House rates tops of any restaurant in New Orleans! The food is excellent. The service is exceptional, especially when Ricahard is wating your table. The steaks are better than Ruth's Chris, cooked similarly. The various breads (especially the egg bread) make a wonderful pre-meal treat! Start with a Mr. John's Salad, topped with Goat cheese, and raspberry sauce. Have a Filet Mignon broiled to your liking. Topped with drawn butter- the steak will melt in your mouth! Add Asparagus with Hollandaise sauce or Spinich and end with hot bread pudding or the chocolate mousse and you're in heaven! But, don't take my word for it. Try it yourself! And, don't forget about Richard. If his tables are full, it's worth the wait to have him as your server. He definitely enhances your dining experience. I give this quaint little restaurant top ratings!
