Editorial Review for Mother's Restaurant – by Chad Kirtland
The Scene
Tourists, locals and CBD suits crowd this deli. Order at the stainless-steel counter, then squeeze into a table or perch against the window overlooking downtown. Celebrity mug shots and military memorabilia offer a glimpse of the restaurant's more-than-60-year history.
The Food
The menu samples many New Orleans home-cooked standards--from breakfast to blue-plate lunches--but the highlight is the quintessential po'boy, a sloppy French bread sandwich overloaded with meat and dressings. The paragon is Mother's signature Ferdie special--baked ham and debris (roast beef pieces that fall in the gravy while cooking) topped with shredded cabbage, pickles and mustard. Get plenty of napkins. Dishes like half a fried chicken, the jambalaya-etouffee-red beans-potato salad combo and spaghetti pie are also sure bets.

Insider Tips
When to GoMother's ain't roomy. The lunch line stretches out the door and down the block, so come early--or late.
Know Before You GoThis spot serves cafeteria-style. You order at the counter, pick it up and grab a seat at any table--even if a stranger is sitting there, too.

As a local, we know----you can get much better poboys at many other places. The seating is very uncomfortable, very loud (although that's typical in New Orleans) and most times it is chaotic!

OMG! My husband and I CAN NOT go to New Orleans without stopping at Mother's. The long line is worth the wait. Actually, the long line is an indication of what is in store. Those folks are working hard and fast and the place just doesnt empty out. We enjoy chatting in line with people traveling from all over and having delicious Bloody Mary's while we wait. Everything we have tried has been wonderful and when you go, don't forget to order the Debris.
