The Scene – Tourists, locals and CBD suits crowd this deli. Order at the stainless-steel counter, then squeeze into a table or perch against the window overlooking downtown. Celebrity mug shots and military memorabilia offer a glimpse of the restaurant's more-than-60-year history. – – The Food – The menu samples many New Orleans home-cooked standards--from breakfast to blue-plate lunches--but the highlight is the quintessential po'boy, a sloppy French bread sandwich overloaded with meat and dressings. The paragon is Mother's signature Ferdie special--baked ham and…
Editor's Tips
- When to Go:
- Mother's ain't roomy. The lunch line stretches out the door and down the block, so come early--or late.
- Know Before You Go:
- This spot serves cafeteria-style. You order at the counter, pick it up and grab a seat at any table--even if a stranger is sitting there, too.
Ham for those who don't eat breakfast
by KTI at Citysearch
Whew! After reading all of the flames, I thought you might want to try some of some excellent ham -- black ham that is. We ate at Mother's a couple of years ago. I don't normally eat ham, but tried the black ham. Wow! Tender, tasty, and decadent. We had breakfast there again today. Poached eggs, grits, black ham --- WOW!
Yes, the system of service is a bit unusual, but not horrible. Ask the rules as you go in the door. They will give you the skinny.
Relax. Have fun. Order the black ham and enjoy.
Horrible Service and food

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Horrible service...Rude and nasty staff, including the owners SON. I paid $17 for a waffle, ham and grits! We waited 40 minutes to get in...And Another 30 minutes for food. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. This place does not exemplify the hospitality and appreciation that is present in New Orleans. I think I am going to write to the Mayor of New Orleans. I attended a huge festival that brought this restaurant a lot of traffic. I am very disappointed in the treatment that me and my party of 6 received.
Better places

Being born and raised in NOLA I can say for sure that there are much better places with friendlier service than Mother's. I was honestly pretty shocked when Travel Channel featured them on a show - they are somewhat of a joke around here.
Not worth the calories, not worth your hard earned money

This is a tourist trap. All of the people who took the survey and gave good reviews on this restaurant is either insane, doesn't know what good food is, or employees, relatives, friends or owner of this restaurant. Crappy service, mediocre food above all pricey for all the abuse you get from their employees. Think about it your keeping their restaurant afloat. You work for your money why would you just waste it on a restaurant who can't get your order right with employees that have attitude written all over them and most of all the food is not great. You must have seen this on tv just like we did but learn from us. Eating here is a really bad idea. Po boys is like eating pigs food the bread is soggy and there's really nothing good to say about their food. Eat and puke. There's a lot of better restaurant in New Orleans don't get trap by hype.

Visited New Orleans for about 1 week. Went here twice. Food is southern, inexpensive and tasty.
- Pros: Great Customer Service and Food
- Cons: can get crowded
