A tony Uptown shoe and accessories boutique in a quiet corner of a downtown mall..
The Scene
Saint Germain's is a small store on the second floor of Canal Place, the upscale mall that houses Saks Fifth Avenue and high-fashion specialty shops such as BCBG, Betsey Johnson and Gucci. Because it's tucked in a quiet corner that doesn't get the foot traffic of mainstream retailers like Banana Republic, the unschooled shopper might miss this hidden treasure altogether--of course, that might be how the store maintains its exclusive yet neighborhood-y atmosphere. St. Charles Avenue social mags linger about the try-on station.
The Goods
The focus at Saint Germain's is select shoes, a few seasonal handbags (such as a palm tree patterned canvas tote for summer) and the occasional trendy but safe accessory (sparkly arm cuffs). But the store is mostly a showroom for the pricey, Italian-made shoes of Donald J. Pliner, a footwear designer with a penchant for leather, animal prints and microfiber.
