Editorial Review for Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve – by Chad Kirtland
In Short
Legendary privateer Jean Lafitte hid out here when not looting ships. His neighbors were backcountry settlers who worked the swamps. Before them, Native Americans settled along Bayou Coquille. The trails harbor remnants of these former inhabitants. The visitors' center is the place to start for maps, info and exhibits. From there, visitors can float the park's 20 miles of waterways (boat rentals are available just outside the park) or hike the 8 miles of boardwalk and hard-surfaced trails. Guided hikes at 10am daily help point out the best sights.
