Quintessential blue-collar hangout with an agreeable lack of pretension and a regular-Joe clientele..
The Scene
Pickle's sits right on the "S" curve where Jefferson Highway turns into Claiborne Avenue, straddling the Jefferson/Orleans parish border. The large, congenial bipedal pickle painted on the wall serves as a welcoming beacon. The bar gets a heavy after-work crowd.
The Draw
Although it boasts only one big-screen and one small television, Pickle's compensates with an authentic, working-class atmosphere. Neighborhood types and just plain folks from their early 20s to their golden years congregate to play darts and video poker and drink tall (very tall) mugs of frosty beer in a no-nonsense environment. The name of the game here is pool. The nine pool tables see a lot of use, even during the slow afternoon hours; things start to get serious around happy hour and are in full swing by dinnertime, when league play gets underway.
