Tips for The Degas House

3.5
November 25, 2003

Make yourself at home in a former artist's abode.. The Scene
If you're put on hold while making a reservation here, you'll hear a message recorded in both English and French. Strains of France are rampant throughout New Orleans, but this place was actually home to the French painter Edward Degas for one year during the 1870s. Reproductions of the work he completed during his stay are hung throughout the building. Hardwood floors, 14-foot ceilings and period furnishings complete the exquisite tableaux. This is a popular destination for weddings, receptions and luncheons, as well as weekends away.

The Details
Most of the private bathrooms contain either antique claw-foot bathtubs or Jacuzzis. Guests in the two smallest rooms may dabble in painting themselves--an easel and pastels are provided. Breakfasts are continental-style during the week and expanded on the weekends to include regional specialties such as bananas Foster french toast. Rates vary drastically according to seasons and festivals.
