Great find after a long day

by inkspotz

The day we went to Lola's had been spent driving around Gulf Port looking for my father-in-law's favorite gumbo place. Alas, the gumbo place had been blown away by Katrina, and we ended up at Cracker Barrel. Mind you, it is not hard to do better than Cracker Barrel, but Lola's really turned the day around. The sangria was very good, and the bread brought to our table was delicious. We went ahead and paid for a second round. I had the Andalusian almond soup, which was a unique delight--chilled, thick, creamy, with the flavor of raw almonds and sea salt, garnished with sliced red grapes. I've been craving it ever since. The paella was good, although it was a bit sparse on the meat. I still had leftovers, though. The place was tiny, and a bit loud, but fun. Our waiter was very professional and courteous. A place I'd like to stop by next time I'm in town.

  • Pros: Sangria, almond soup, service
  • Cons: Pricing a bit high

not bad, but not a value

by mdelvecchio

id heard a lot about this place, so we checked it out: drinks, app, entree. service was good. the sangria is very good, especially at $10 a bottle. id go again for that. app was fine, but the entree -- $16 for paella? $18 for "seafood" -- i put this in quotes because our "seafood" conisted of two (2) musells, four (4) bites of fish, and a few very small shrimp. for almost 20 bucks! im sorry, but paella IS RICE. why so expensive?

also, they CHARGE FOR BREAD. but they do not tell you this when the bread-lady offers it to you. wtf charges for bread?? (esp when youre banking on your rice dish...)

and no credit cards. lame. its a digital society, baby. get with the times.

so... i thought the beverage was good, and the service was good, but the value...bad.

  • Pros: good sangria
  • Cons: paella over-priced, bread charges, bright lighting

great food, laidback atmosphere

by gabor07

Before I lived in New Orleans, we always made a point to come to Lola's when we visited. Now I live down the street from it and it's still just as fantastic. Their crabmeat appetizer is excellent. The pork is Huge and the best I've had anywhere. And their lamb chops, though a bit of a splurge are worth every penny. They have their liquer licence now (beer and wine only) but you can still BYOB, though their wine prices are cheap compared to many places. We haven't had to wait very long lately either, though sitting outside on a nice night drinking your wine from plastic cups is part of Lola's charm.

  • Pros: great food, garlic central
