The Scene
Mat & Naddie's has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. The main dining room--divided by a single exposed-brick chimney--feels open, yet intimate. An open-air deck gives a view of the Riverbend levee. Both are breezy and casual.

The Food

Hearty interpretations of American and New Orleans classics dominate the menu. Asian influences sneak into the New Orleans black bean-barbecued shrimp--deliciously tender tails flash-grilled and accompanied by a bold sauce of fermented black beans. Oysters Rockefeller pizza appetizer is a wonderful variation on the local half-shell classic. Crisp flatbread is covered with a layer of spinach purée and tasso cream sauce, then topped with plump, tender oysters with a scatter of salty Parmigiano-Reggiano. The Double Duck Treat showcases breast and leg meat along with tasso-studded gumbo.

Although I only went to Mat and Naddie's once, and although I only had dessert, I must say that this is one cool little place. The atmosphere is the best part. It features very cool decor and live gypsy swing music on Monday nights. I decided on the night that I went to Mat and Naddie's that I wanted to live a little and order my dessert first. Best decision! I had a warm chocolate and peanut butter cake that sent me to the moon. If you have a sweet tooth, this is certainly a good spot to cure it!

After reading the citysearch review for Mat & Naddie's, I was expecting great food and a stand-out experience. The atmosphere was very comfortable and intimate. The clientele was far from trendy; sweater-clad and over 45. Not to be discouraged, we continued on toward our table and examined the menu. It was very limited and few things appealed to my taste. A few fish dishes, an unappetizing-sounding duck dish, a filet, and some vegetarian options were the only offered entrees. The wine menu, however, was extensive and offered a fantastic selection. Beer drinkers are faced with a small selection limited to Abitas and a couple of imports. Citysearch has labeled this as one $ pricewise. However, I was surprised to find the entrees were priced at an average of $23. Service was rather slow throughout the night. The gulf fish was fantastic and complemented by crab meat and a fantastic sweet and tangy sauce. The eggplant ratatoullie was a meager helping accented by a sauce that can only be described as a cross between cheetos and tacos. We did not see our waitress until we were finished. I had only a couple bites of my meal and told the waitress I did not like it. To my surprise, she replied I should have told her earlier, did not remove it from our bill, and did not offer me any other meal. Should you venture out to Mat & Naddie's, be prepared for "pretty" food and subpar service. If you chose one of their fantastic wines, it may make the night a little more enjoyable.

Chef Kelly Burns uses unique ideas to give diners an impressive dinner. When asked to recommend a local place, my answer is always Mat and Naddies. The reports back to me are always glowing and hugh thanks for recommending it.

The Extras:

Rife with comments from enthusiastic staff members, Mat & Naddie's wine list makes for a great, unstuffy read.

Know Before You Go:

The formal address sometimes causes confusion with out-of-towners, so the cafe usually describes its location as "where Freret meets the River." Any cab driver will understand those directions.
