An Aging Star – I stayed at the Melrose Mansion as an anniversary gift with my fiance, and I was less than impressed. We reserved the best room and were greeted with unchanged linens, cracking paint in the room, and no complimentary breakfast. The people at the Melrose are extremely friendly and perfectly willing to make suggestions about restaurants and nightlife, but I just feel it is impossible to justify the cost of the room when it seems to be in mild disrepair.
The quintessential beauty and spirit of the French Quarter. – The Scene
Although it technically sits outside the French Quarter, this hotel embodies all the character of that famed area. It resides in the adjacent Faubourg Marigny on Esplanade Avenue, the dividing line between the two neighborhoods. The complex consists of the original carriage house, a courtyard and an 1884 mansion lovingly brought back from decrepitude and painted a brilliant white.
The bedrooms here are straight from fantasy land. Four-poster beds are made of mahogany or elegant ironwork, and additional furnishings include antique dressers, gauzy lace curtains, rich linens and baths tiled in marble. Attentive service means little extras like fresh flowers in every room and wine in the evenings. The outdoor pool is heated.
