The Scene
Everything is wood--wood paneling, wood chairs, wood tables. A thick rope net covers the low ceiling and paintings of schooners and ships line the walls. A rustic seating area glows with the light of a metal ship illuminated by small, white Christmas lights. A friendly din rises from the mix of locals and tourists as everyone talks to everyone. Head through the dark space to the back for a more "formal" seating area with tables topped in red cloth.

The Food
The menu is short and sweet: hamburgers, pizza and steak. The place is known for its hamburger and baked potato dinner. The half pound of fresh ground is like a backyard barbecue burger, thick with pickles, lettuce and a quarter-inch slab of onion on the side. Cheeseburgers come piled high with a heap of shredded cheddar. Wash it all down with a horseradish-infused bloody mary or signature tropical cocktail.

In short, this place has THE best cheeseburger I've ever had in my life. What to order: Cheeseburger, medium (or medium rare). Baked Potato with everything (inc. mushrooms). While you wait, have a monsoon or two. Don't expect a quiet dinner - this is the place to go when you're feeling raucous!

Went to get a table ten minutes before Last Call, stood there for ten minutes until the name-taker, who had been nowhere to be found, stopped drinking and flirting with girls at the bar came over to our party and told us we couldn't be seated because it was past Last Call. Wasn't even nice about it. Security guard in the vicinity was really mean and actually put me on the verge of tears. Bartenders weren't any better. ONE nice waitress. Honestly, the overpriced burgers aren't worth the attitude you get from the people working there. Go to Angeli on Decatur or Camellia Grill for better service, a better burger, and people who are actually nice. And a quick add-on, when I called to talk to some sort of manager about this, I was told that Port of Call didn't need our business anyway. They must not "need the business" bad enough to warrant professional, polite behavior. Amazing.

We last ate at Port of Call on August 1, 2008. We ordered a Filet Mignon to split. It came with a nice salad with Italian Dressing, two fresh buns, a potato with just butter ( as we requested) and a filet, perfectly done as we ask - medium rare. We have been coming here for the past two years, and always sit at the bar. Its an eclectic bar for sure, but don't let ancient mariner memorabilia, and dark environs scare you. The place is a gem. The staff have been there for years, and are as much of a reason to go as any. These people treat us like family after being here just a few times. The burgers are great, and the potatoes can be anything you want, as they have more ingredients than you can imagine. We only order the same drinks, so I cant comment on the Monsoons, etc.. But the traffic for them is great. The clientele are locals and tourists - no riff raff. With the turnover nightly, they run a clean ship. We came from San Francisco, and spend a good amount of time here. These are the best burgers we have ever had, and the best steaks for both size and price. If you want to enjoy it for the first time, get there when they open, and choose a spot to enjoy both the food, and the other people enjoying the food. It can be quite busy at times, but keep in mind that the food and drink are worth waiting for!
