Editorial Review for Central Grocery Company – by Jill Gottesman

The Scene
This crowded storefront just off the Mississippi River is really more like an old-time Italian deli than a restaurant. Shelves are piled high with pastas, canned mushrooms, sardines, tomato sauces and the like, but locals swear by the house specialty: plate-sized muffulettas. Don't look for tables here; diners sit on bar stools at long wooden countertops. If the crowds are too thick, consider taking your food to go and finding a bench along the river.

The Food
A New Orleans favorite, the muffuletta starts with a whole loaf of round Italian bread, which is stuffed to overflowing with Italian meats and cheeses, then topped with a rich olive salad.

For most, a quarter sandwich will do just fine; a half will put you away for the rest of the day.

Absolutely the best Mufellattas in the world. They invented them, so how on earth could they be wrong? The person writing about cheap ingredients and saving money is way off base. One couldn't be more insanely ignorant about a classic culinary creation.

Pros: Great tasting, and highest level of satisfaction

Cons: Theres only in New Orleans

As a local New Orleans resident, this was once a great place to grab a bite to eat, but it has forgotten that it's the locals that made it famous. This place has replaced the high quality foods it once used with boiled ham, swiss cheese, and stale bread. The olive salad isn't the old recipe, but a cheaper one. They have cut corners every which way and rasied prices to boot!

Pros: Good local groceries and spices for sale inside.

Cons: No parking, poor food quality, pre-made by the dozens, not enough seating, high prices, no restrooms, no place to wash your hands, no place for the employees to wash their hands.
