You can't come to NOLA & not stop by Cafe du Monde-it's a staple & they're open 24/7! The beignets are piping hot and fresh & topped with a generous amount of powdered sugar-delish!
I was refused Service at Cafe Du Monde !!!!! Rude and Racist. Ah the lovely south. Things have not changed. I was just refused service by the wait staff at Cafe Du Monde and I was even wearing a hoody!!!! When will racism ever cease. ? The staff person who refused me service should be fired.....There is enough disrespect an hatred in the world agains black men........but when I spend my money at an establishment...I should be treated with decency and respect by the service team!!!! Things won't get better in America unless we are all committed to fighting racism when it raises it ugly head!!! — at Cafe Du Monde.
Great coffee too.
Best coffee (au lait) I've found in the South. Beignets are served hot, doughy and not too sweet. The sweetness cones from the generous powdered sugar.
So happy I hit to taste the original Beignet experience.
The to-go line moves fast and service is friendly.
Interesting experience. Sat out on the patio eating fried powdered donuts and coffee and all of the sudden if flash flooded so we ran inside. Wasn't their fault and we definitely had fun.
Beignets.
Dan and I made our first visit to NOLA February 20 11.
My daughter and his brother encourged us not to miss CdM, and we didn't. It was cold, drizzling rain and we were tired. CdM was warm and dry. The coffee was great and the Beignets were heavenly. It was crowded and very busy but we did not wait long for service. Hey people, it's NOLA! It's the culture, the mystique the tradition. I did not use the rest rooms but I have seen plenty other discusting facilities in well known restaurantes. Give the city a break, it's romantic. Embrace the culture, you can always go home. *It is cash only.
Delicious. Growing up "New Orleans" can't happen unless you embrace the city itself and all it has to offer. Go anywhere in the United States besides NOLA and you won't be able to find a beignet thats actually authentic and not a donut. In the Heart of the French Quarter sits this amzing cafe where you can find deliciously authentic new orleans beignets that cannot compare to anywhere else in Louisiana. Cafe Du monde was a favorite of mine growing up and still is to this day
Cafe du Mone.
Well, it's hard to explain. I grew up in N.O. but have been away for 30 yrs. Everytime we are in NO visiting family we all head down to CdM. I am noticing how they are changing. When I was little and we would go every Sat night and probably up until 2000, the beignets never changed. They are supposed to be a light dough with a hollow inside, and yes, smothered in powdered sugar. Well, you can't get powdered sugar wrong, but I think with the abudance of beignets they have to cook at one time, they don't let the dough rise and now they are just a heavy, chewy dough smothered in powdered sugar. When they are hot off the grill - YUM, YUM, but an hour later - hard and you can't enjoy them. We would buys dozens and take back home with us and 2 or 3 days later then were as good as when you just bought them. I had never seen so many people waiting to get a table there - they need to shut down, add on/remodel and also address the "cleanliness" issue. I remember when I was little and we woiuld to through the kitchen to get to the bathroom and even then I thought, YUK, but once you eat the beignet
you forget the YUK. Outsiders wouldn ever understand that the best food in NO is from the "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants. I'm not dead and we've eaten at these places all our lives. Just go an enjoy,. I do wish the beignets would go back to being as good as long ago..
Terrible Service & Unsanitary.
We've gone to Cafe du Monde for years, but something has changed. We waited over 20 minutes at a table with dirty dishes. Numerous employees went by delivering orders elsewhere while we waited. Someone pointed me to the owner who didn't seem to understand customer service or New Orleans' friendliness at all.
A trip to the restroom gave me a look at the kitchen, which was filthy. Do health inspectors check things in New Orleans?
Sadly, it was a really upsetting visit for our entire group who ended up leaving.
I hope there's somewhere else in New Orleans for beignets. Certainly, there are many, many with great food and wonderful service. Spend your time and money there.
I always take people and they always love it.
I am confused by the reviews that say the beignets are bad. A beignet is fried dough smothered in powered sugar. It's like crack for adults. If you don't agree with the basic premise of deep fried dough with sugar all over it, then you should not eat beignets.
The beignets at CdM are addictive and chewy and delicious, and the place is a hustle bustle of slightly irritated waitstaff, buskers and wiped and rewiped tables. The coffee is also extremely enjoyable. It's a tourist trap! In the best sense of the word. I always take guests, and they always love it.
Excellent. The Beignets are worth going down to the French Quarter. The atmosphere is not the greatest, but if you have ever lived in NOLA like I have it is not a bother. This is an outdoor restaurant and street people can be a hassle. Still, despite the downsides, it is a great experience.
Yummy beignets; NASTY atmosphere. Second time in New Orleans and wanted to get the beignets again. Perhaps I was drunk the first time. This time, being totally sober I realized what a gross place this is. The beignets are good but the whole place seemed really unsanitary...I'm sure the glasses and mugs are not washed adequately. And the tables are rarely washed down. If the take out line is short, go that route and take your goodies and coffee (in disposable cups...although I'm sure they're grimy too from sitting around in the back kitchen) and enjoy in Jackson Square.
