Fun and Funky. I just moved to town and looked this store up on the net. I found some great vintage peices and thought the prices were pretty good. If you are looking for that one of a kind item or a costume this is a great place. I can see that it is not for everyone, especially if you don't know about vintage or know how to rock hipster clothes.
too bad. I have shopped at this store on and off for almost 20 years (it was originally located in the french quarter) and have always loved it. I have, once before, sold some vintage pieces to the store at great prices but not today. I have to say my experience at the store today has me swearing off ever returning to the shop again. The standard there is 40% of the retail price in cash or 50% given in store credit. I was giving no where near the 40% of what the will charge for the items (most items on the racks are $30.00 or more, I received a mere 5 bucks an item). I left feeling robbed and Now really wished I hadn't sold them. They are unethical, dishonest and not to mention just plain rude. The prices are also outrageous for what they are selling which is simpley secondhand clothing. They have absolutely no working knowledge of valuable vintage and it shows. I will never return and feel sorry for the future customers that will be taken by the shop. Some reward for years of patronage. Thanks!
Not IMPRESSED.
1) They were rude. I guess if you are a black male wearing true religion jeans and an american apparel t-shirt, then they don't want to talk to you. 3 employees separately directed me to another employee to get help while one was on the phone, one was reading a newspaper and the other one REFUSED to acknowledge my existence.
2) Ridiculous prices. I walked to two different stores (one within a few blocks) and found some of the same "vintage" stuff for $20- $35 cheaper.
Try Buffalo Exchange or The salvation army. They are nicer and have far far FAR better pricing and staff
More than mediocre....
My first visit to the Funky Monkey was a mostly enjoyable one...
The prices are pretty darn good but more than a few of the items I looked at had large stains or holes...some items were worth the repair but many of them were not...
Their jewelry selection is great as were the purses...the racks were easy to shop...sized properly too!
The staff was a bit stiff and not very friendly...I don't need someone down my throat while shopping but please smile or say 'thank you' when I hand over considerable cash to your store...
Overall my experience was more 'average' than my stars denote but I give them an extra star for being a locally owned business and for giving a bit higher of a monetary compensation to those who are selling them their secondhand goodies...
my favorite vintage spot.
This shop is awesome. Both my boyfriend and I found cool vintage stuff, and they had alot of costumes and clothing by local designers. I'll stop by here whenever I'm in town. Check out the make your own tshirts, too.

Purveyor of street wear for neo-vintage swingers..
The Scene
Rockabilly poseurs of the "Swingers" persuasion and adventurous boojie antiquers hungry for a wild card. Funky Monkey is one of a string of nearly identical quasi-thrift stores lent authenticity by the surrounding Magazine Street antique markets. It's a great place for thrift initiates to start--instead of making you pick through piles of rubbish for one perfect piece, the proprietors of these shops do the hard part for you, stocking their few racks with only the cleanest, most desirable finds.
The Stock
True vintage hounds may be disappointed by the boutique's manufactured, kitschy vibe and merchandise. Genuine classics share space with made-to-order '80s concert T's and plenty of new constructions. Much of the stock is actually faux-vintage, including reproductions of older clothes pre-aged to look authentic. Of course, the inventory varies with trends, but lovers of '50s garb, punk-inspired and Western threads, Hawaiian shirts, and even retro bathing suits should come away happy.
awesome duds at low prices!. funky monkey has the best selection of vintage clothes at very reasonable prices. they have a great selection of vintage, new clothing, and accessories. they also trade your clothes for cash or trade discounts!
