Editorial Review for Dunbar's Creole Cooking – by Pableaux Johnson

The Scene
This simple white-frame restaurant looks like dozens of other neighborhood eateries in town. But what sets Dunbar's apart is its trademark $5 special--an all-you-can-eat extravaganza of red beans and fried chicken.

The Food
In keeping with local laundry-day tradition, the red beans and rice are spicy and substantial, striking a good balance between creamy and firm. The dark-meat chicken included in the special (white meat is available for a reasonable $1 extra) features crisp skin. Long cooking makes for deeper, more developed flavor, but the bird's meat remains moist. If you're not in the mood for poultry with your beans, Dunbar's has a smoked sausage substitute that slices under the slightest fork pressure and melts on the tongue. Breakfast platters, po-boys, seafood, steak and rotating specials are other menu options; the lineup of Southern-style cakes and other large desserts change daily.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

As of September 2006 Dunbar's is back at 501 Pine St. It's on the Broadway Campus of Loyola University, just off Broadway and St. Charles. It's the cafeteria of the student union for the law school, but the Dunbar family is serving up just like Freret Street. They didn't have flood insurance and haven't had money to re-open. They do plan to re-open on Freret, but in the meantime they're open for business M-Sat 7am-7pm

Pros: simply amazing food, amazing price

Cons: cardio killer, slow service

Everytime I go to NOLA Dunbars is always on my to do list (often more than once). Well worth the walk from the St Charles streetcar line (would not go by myself though)
