Family owned and operated, lovely old NOLA,envokes Anne Rice, great location,affordable..
Have stayed their quite a few times, first recommended by the VCPD a long time ago, we were so pleased after staying in a chain the year before. The prices are reasonable considering their location, walking distance of everywhere. It does need a little TLC,but so does my home.We could invite guests over for dinner in the court yard, Petunias[ a restaurant aroung the corner ] catered for us.We have an amusing storie of the elavator [ drunken operator error ] so I've always taken the stairs. There are rooms more desirable than other's but the're very thorough at explaining the rooms, and the layout .I prefer the courtyard
areas.Reading the paper in the morning in the courtyard, cocktails in the evening before you go out.The staff will go out of their way to accomidate your needs.I stayed in a chain{on someone else's dime] right up the corner a few years ago, I could see "The Olivier House" from the pool and just wished I was there. My dream has been since I first stated there in 1989, [ that one day I'll be the next owner after I retire] and keep almost everything the same, my husband doesn't exactly feel quite the same after Katrina. Since there is parking available [which is rare there, trust me] I can save on airfaire it's ONLY a19 hour drive, but also interesting places to stay along the way.New Orleans is always calling my name, and since Katrina they need the support more than ever.By the way my friend who wanted to stay at the chain after she saw "The Olivier House" she wished she had followed my recomendation, we plan on taking our children to the [in]famous Cresent City. You'd be crazy not to stay here if you want the the true NOLA experience.Have a great time!
Run-down shame. Wanting to get away from cookie-cutter chain hotels and experience an old-world style hotel in the French Quarter, we booked one of the pricier suites at Olivier House. When we first walked in, we were excited - our suite had a large living room and equally large bedroom, both with floor to ceiling windows leading out to a huge balcony. Then, we looked more closely. The molding on the doorways and around the windows was filthy - there was a layer of dust just as old as the hotel it was in. The bed swayed back and forth like a hammock and seemed ready to collapse at any moment. Wallpaper was peeling everywhere, and mold grew in many corners of the walls and ceiling. A peek under the bed revealed dust bunnies larger than my head. It was a weekend of might-have-beens. The hotel might have been glorious, but it was in desperate need of some cleaning and some TLC. All in all, it was hugely disappointing.
Bethy. After reading some fairly negative reviews by other people posted on this site, I felt compelled to offer my opinion on the Olivier House. This hotel was everything I love about New Orleans....old, funky, inviting, mysterious. If you are a lover of antiques, this place had some incredible pieces. We spent several afternoons sitting in the lush courtyard, only to witness various people wandering in off the street and marveling at how beautiful the foyer and courtyards were. Bravo! I am so glad that I went with my gut instinct on this place! People who enjoy the sterile, rubber blanket, thin towel stays offered by chain hotels will never be able to appreciate this French Quarter gem.
Noble Neglect. Don't let neglect in the title mislead you. My girlfriend and I, visiting from New York, stayed here for 5 days in July and loved this hotel. It is centrally located and the staff was really helpful and friendly. If you expect to stay in a place that is like any other hotel anywhere else, then this place is not for you. But if you want an experience that hints at the French Quarter's bohemian history, then stay here. It was like living in a old plantation (think Bel Reve). We loved it. Stay here and let the romance of visiting the French Quarter sweep you away.
DON'T MISS THIS GEM!!. Without a doubt the most divine place to stay in the French Quarter. I have never felt so "at home" while away from home. The atmosphere is incredibly romantic and is the epitome of why I love New Orleans so much!
The Worst!. This place, for all its supposed charm is more like a dump. The parrot in the courtyard--iwas cute but that's definitely not worth the price of admission! The staff was quite pleasant, but our rooms were FREEZING and there was never anything done about it! This is too bad since the Olivir House itself is beautiful but in a horrid state of repair!!
