Editorial Review for The Fairmont New Orleans – by Gayot.com
The Scene
This hotel's position near Canal Street puts it one block from the French Quarter and a short walk to the convention center. It was built in 1893 and became the Roosevelt Hotel in 1923 in honor of Theodore Roosevelt. The Fairmont chain purchased it in 1965.
The Details
The splendid block-long lobby is a marvel of marble, ornate carpeting and crystal chandeliers. Its seasonal decorations, especially at Christmas, are opulent. It also contains the legendary-with-locals Blue Room, once the city's top supper club, but now used only for special events. The 700 guest rooms and 85 suites feature lustrous wood furniture. A refurbishing spiffed up these spacious high-ceilinged accommodations with colorful decor and modern amenities. Beds are dressed with down pillows and quilted bedspreads, and elaborate bathrooms include oversized towels.
