Metairie >Taj Mahal Indian Cuisine
The WORST Indian Restaurant I've ever been to.
This was the worst experience I have ever had at a Indian restaurant. Coming from a place of some of the best Indian reastaurants, I was craving for Indian food. I've been to the place twice before in the Fall, and it was'nt so bad. Note that there are very few choices that you have. Choosing Taj Mahal was my worst decision.
As we entered with our infants stroller, I was disappointed to find that they had changed the decor for worse. The seats have been changed to huge 'maharaja' style chairs that you would typically find at an Indian wedding. I can understand giving an Indian feel to the place, but you need to have ample space to add such bulky furniture. The place now seemed so cramped. We had to remove some chairs and rearrange inorder to get the stroller inside.
Finally we settled down. Within minutes my family including our infant were drenched in sweat. There was only one old window AC unit and 3 portable fans to the rescue. You have to take into consideration that this is NOLA...hot and humid. You CANNOT expect one window unit to suffice. Add the hot Indian food and it gets worse.
We decided to take a quick bite and escape. Alas, most of the trays with food were empty. We literally had to scrape food off the bottom of the trays. Within minutes a staff politely said "Please take whatever food you need...buffet closes in 5 minutes". Only there was NO food. What a shame.
I swore to never visit this or any other Indian restaurant in NOLA (I was told that the other restaurant Nirvana is also run by the same management). That leaves us with no other choice.
I respect the opinion of the other reviewers who have rated this restaurant better. But I would suggest them to visit any restaurant in Atlanta to know what good Indian food is.
Good Restaurant...But Beware of Charges!. The culinary presentation, taste and service is excellent at this location. However, be wary of the charges placed on your bill. I attended with a group of four and a mandatory gratuity (normally reserved for groups of FIVE or more) was added onto the bill. The receipt only reflected the total price including this gratuity, so I added on an additional tip unknowingly. I corrected my mistake when I realized the total was higher than appropriate.
Best Indian I ever had. metairie Rd. locale. Dine here frequently. Excellent Rogan Josh. Changed rice; Old rice much better. Still very worth it. Reasonable cost. Great atmosphere. Very attentive waitstaff.
Taj Mahal. This place has a very comfortable atmosphere and great service. The waitstaff was very accommodating. The location was very convenient and was not over crowded, felt like home. However, they had a buffet but I chose not to partake due to wanting traditional spicy cuisine. I ordered the Traditional Chicken Curry with side of rice and asked for it to be served traditionally spicy, the spicier the better. The flavor was exquisite yet not spicy at all. The waiter came over and I told him, after he asked how it was, "it could be spicier". I asked him to serve the dish as spicy as they could make it, and off he went. Returned 3 minutes later. Once again, bolder flavor and very appetizing, yet, still not spicy. Don't get me wrong, the dish was extremely pleasing and the flavor was to die for. I highly recommend this location of dinning and I will be returning again. Thank you Taj Mahal for lunch, but please spice it up when asked.
Great food, people, and ambience. Needs more spice..
We've been to this restaurant 3 times now and the only thing that doesn't get top marks from us is the spice level. I'm not sure if they don't think we can handle it, but we've ordered their spiciest dishes and have not been that impressed.
No other complaints besides that. The dining room is small and intimate adorned with nice decorations. Staff is very courteous and efficient.
good food. I think the best food to be had anywhere for dinner in the world right now is in our very own taj mahal in new orleans. I know that not every body like Indian food. I recommend you buttery chicken and lamb kabab, these are the only food I tried, you are free to discover rest. I bet it is not easy to find these rare combinations of spacious, neat atmosphere, delicious food, friendly environment, great service, average price .Ancient environment. It has not so many tables so is good for have a romantic night. and cloes to down town
A low-key palace of international cuisine in Metairie..
Like most businesses, this Mahal pales in comparison to its architectural namesake. But the Metairie restaurant has a relaxed environment by any standards. Tables are best for small groups and dates, dishes are served on stark metal plates, and the wine list is select. Service is a solid mix of casual and knowledgeable. Vegetarians will find their share of options, especially the aloo gobi and the deep, tasty saag dishes.
