In Short – Dark wood floors and green walls highlight the dozen or so tables at this quaint bistro (formerly Mango House) off Carrollton Avenue. Couples nestle inside the two-room, New Orleans-style house to nosh on gnocchi, shrimp and duck confit appetizers. Other menu favorites include halibut, beef short ribs, duck breast and fettuccini. Meanwhile, smokers and those who want to enjoy an early spring breeze opt for seating on the front porch.

Best Restaurant in Town

by BestBankBrown

First off, the address on this site is wrong. This restaurant has moved to the French Quarter at 321 N. Peters St. This is a wonderful restaurant that I have recently discovered located in the French Quarter. I have never had a bad dish there. The scallops and the duck are probably my favorite. But then there are also the sweetbreads and the duck confit salad. It is obvious from the first bite that this chef loves what he does. The atmosphere is great for any occasion. I have been there with a large group and also for a quiet dinner with my wife. While it is in the Quarter, it is also perfectly tucked away on the first floor of an historic hotel with a private patio (available for dining) and pool. I think the majority of patrons are locals. Another thing I like is that it is a nice change of pace from the standard New Orleans dishes served at most other French Quarter establishments. Iris is the kind of restaurant that would be the new hot, place-to-be in New York or many larger cities, but in many ways is one-of-a-kind here in New Orleans. The service was excellent -- never in your face but always there and very knowledgeable about all the food and wine. Also, the bartender there is some kind of wizard, constantly inventing new delicious cocktails.

Dinner at Iris restaurant

by nolacathie

I had dinner at Iris on Saturday night with two friends and we were all disappointed with our meals.

I ordered a sirloin strip steak, rare, and parmesan fries ($26). When my steak arrived it was no more than a thin little steak with an unnecessary round of butter on top, reminiscent of the kind they used to serve at Bonanza or Buck Forty Nine. Nothing extraordinary, in fact, way less than ordinary. My friends each had something different...beef short ribs (2) and a few potatoes with fennel - not great; the other friend had scallops which she said were okay. After all of the write-ups touting a great menu and awesome chef, we were expecting much more for a meal that cost us $95 for no appetizers, salad, dessert, or alcohol, or even coffee....just entrees and water. Much improvement is needed to compete in a city still known for delicious cuisine!

  • Pros: nice uptown location
  • Cons: the food, menu choices

Potential

by jarreau7

I must say that the service was excellent. On the other hand, my group think that's it way over-priced. Everything from the wine prices to dessert. I ordered the Duck entree and it wasn't even a duck. I am a avid hunter and it definately was not duck. More like a small turkey was a drumstick. Probably will not return.

  • Pros: Atmosphere
  • Cons: Price!!!!
