Editorial Review for La Cote Brasserie – by Pableaux Johnson

The Scene
With wraparound windows, a sleek marble bar and an active open kitchen, this wide, open space balances intimacy and action. Gracefully curved leather banquettes and beige sculptural brick columns break up the expansive room. The room's size keeps amiable, if harried, servers running.

The Food
La Cote plays both sides of the Franco-fence with its seafood-heavy menu: straightforward boiled and raw seafood in the Parisian style, alongside New World Creole and Cajun-influenced dishes. For starters, crispy skewered shrimp play well with a vegetable pear slaw that's crunchy, peppery and spicy in all the right places. Pan-fried redfish gets a deeper Southern treatment with cornbread "Johnny cake," earthy, smothered okra and tangy cherry tomatoes with pickled shrimp for zing. Meaty options include a cured ham chop, a salty and sweet pork loin chop served with molasses-spiked sweet potatoes. Opt for vacherin, blackberry and creme fraiche sorbets on crispy, lemon-hinted meringue for dessert.

Where to Sit

Dark-wood banquettes are perfect for business lunches, but too deep for romantic chats. In the mood to coo? Request a secluded four-top.

Know Before You Go

Save Money

It specializes in larger dishes like paella for two and intricate chilled seafood platters that feed up to six.

Ordered every type of oyster on the menu (6 in all) and they were great. Also had a sampling of the different appetizers along with the glazed salmon. The food was wonderful in every way. Everything I expected of a good New Orleans restaurant. The atmosphere was also exquisite along with good service. Only complaint I had was that parking was a little tricky on Friday night since a popular nigh club was located nearby.

Pros: New Orleans Cuisine the way I have come to expect it!

Cons: Parking on "party nights" (Friday & Saturday) was difficult due to local bars and night spots

I ordered the chicken which was to be atop white bean cassoulet. When I got it, it was risotto, like they thought I wouldn't notice. When I mentioned it to the waiter, he said that they must have run out of cassoulet. Duh. Why didn't someone tell me, I would have ordered something else. No sorry, no comp glass of wine or dessert, no manager. I work for the Ritz Carlton and this is completely unacceptable for a hotel of this caliber. The bartender behind the bar was foul-mouthed and the atmosphere was way too casual for my taste. I hope that they staff better as the city returns.

Pros: atmosphere

Cons: food availibility, parking (fee), loud
