Editorial Review for Rene Bistrot – by Pableaux Johnson

The Scene
Simultaneously modern and cozy, the setting balances a retro-themed living room aesthetic with contemporary colors and textures (copper planters, metallic mosaic). Floor-to-ceiling windows give the room an airy feel and the thoroughly artsy bar is good for solo munching on slower nights. Servers play on the formal, yet unpretentious, side of the fence.

The Food
The chef updates everyday French fare with considerable imagination and precision. Start with a flawless French onion soup with a velvety Gruyere custard or a crunchy galette topped with a beautifully constructed rosette of delicate smoked salmon. Entrees range from tender redfish Sebaste subtly accented with shiitake ginger broth to an outstanding roasted chicken served "grandmother style" (with bacon, sweet onion, garlic and earthy mushrooms). Sweet courses follow through nicely: Roasted pears poached in caramel sauce are a dream for winter fruit fans.

Insider Tips

Parking

Complimentary valet parking is a godsend for drivers unfamiliar with downtown's usually packed side streets.

Where to Sit

A hidden row of banquettes behind the bar are intimate and quiet, if a bit claustrophobic.

Heard very little buzz about this place, but it was our favorite meal in New Orleans and we went to all the name places!! Clear clean fresh tastes cultivated by a master in the kitchen, wished we had another day to have another meal there! They smoke their own salmon which melts in your mouth - try the shrimp and arichoke salad for total delight - the bouillabaise was exceptional and the desserts are glorious - try the banana/milk chocolate mousse - we were weeping w/delight!

Pros: Foof!!, Ambiance
