Editorial Review for Muriel's Jackson Square – by Pableaux Johnson
The Scene
A literal stone's throw from General Jackson's statue, this spacious restaurant and bar complex blends modern and historic in a series of sumptuous dining rooms: deep red walls with art nouveau downstairs, full-bore gold leaf in the upper quarters. The grand oak bar makes for a perfect romantic rendezvous, as does the broad balcony overlooking Jackson Square.
The Food
Modernized Creole dishes are consistently well-executed, especially grilled offerings like a flame-kissed quail starter paired with tender sweet-potato cubes and roasted pecans. Sauteed redfish (served amandine style) is perfectly teamed with insanely rich mashed potatoes and meticulously trimmed baby carrots. Steak lovers head straight for filet tournedos, drizzled with flawless red-wine sauce and pleasingly funky blue cheese wontons. For dessert, the peanut-chocolate bombe is astounding. Filled with delicate mousse and caramel, it's the peanut butter cup of your dreams.

Insider Tips
Look GoodDress code is officially listed as "smart casual," but in practice, it's more "French Quarter flexible." The surroundings are on the formal side, so doll up a bit.
ParkingMuriel's provides two options for validated parking: the garage at the Place D'Armes hotel and a Vieux Carre lot at 535 Chartres.

This restaurant was hyped up way too much. The location is nice and the place is pretty, but the food is nothing to applaud. The appetizers and desserts far outranked the main courses. I found the dishes poorly presented and chunky rather than delicate. St least the portions are substantial. I suppose it used to be fantastic but went downhill after being so popular.
Pros: Substantial portions
Cons: Way too expensive for what you get and very impersonal
