Unassuming downtown sushi bar shines with perfectly-executed sushi, unconventional Japanese specialties and crisp, friendly service..
The Scene
Tucked away in a hotel-heavy section of the CBD, Horinoya blends Japanese formality and neighborhood comfort. The painted brick dining room is brightly lit and accented with blonde wood blue neon. A single banquette runs the length of the narrow room; a long sushi bar provides chef-side seating.
The Food
Impeccable fish and exceptional attention to detail pull in local sushi lovers, but Horinoya's deep menu contains plenty of seafood standouts. The miso-marinated pompano appetizer is a quick-seared masterpiece with crispy crust and flaky, moist interior. Flash-fried tempura dishes are shatteringly crisp without a hint of grease. Confirmed carnivores can choose from a variety of sukiyaki and noodle options, but should steer clear of the bland chicken teriyaki. Generous slabs of fish of the nigori sushi are too big for one bite. Rolls are artfully constructed and presented.
