Though his more casual Cochon gets all the press, Donald Link's fine-dining restaurant, Herbsaint, is a towering accomplishment, a real monument to the flavors of New Orleans.
Good Place for a Casual, Fun Dinner. The dining room is loud. It's hip and relaxed. Ther staff is pleasant and knowledgeable. The food is good but nothing great. I ordered steak medium rare and had to send it back and when it returned, it looked like it was "thrown" onto my plate. I would have expected a restaurant like this to cook my dish from the beginning and not nuke it. Some desserts are just average while others stand out like the coconut cream pie. Overall it's a nice place but not for a romantic date or any special occassion.
Excellent Choice. Great dining experience for seven women. Each course was really good, but the raves really piled up for the Brown Butter Banana Tart. Whatever you order, be sure and save room for the best dessert ever.
At the Top of our List. During our last trip to New Orleans, we ate at The Bistro at Maison de Ville, Galatoire's, and Mr. B's Bistro, in addition to Herbsaint. Though they were all (for the most part) very good, Herbsaint was the absolute favorite of my husband for the food (and second for the service). Of my dishes, the shrimp with green chile grit cakes with tasso cream sauce was quite good, and the beef short rib on potato cake with dijon horseradish dressing was wonderful. However, when I tasted the coconut cream pie with macadamia nut crust, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! Herbsaint is easily accessible via the St. Charles Streetcar; it's a nice change to be that far away from the French Quarter!
Great cocktails!. We had to wait about 30 minutes for our table so we had the opportunity to sit at the bar and sample a drink. Terrific! So was dinner, but not many places can make a really good cocktail. Also the bannana tart was unforgettable.
Fabulousity!. I have traveled the country living on generous expense accounts for 20 years and I have rarely had the treat I experienced at Herbsaint in November. The food was indescribable, the wine a perfect accompaniment and the service beyond compare. Have what ever they recommend, but save room for the Brown Butter Banana tart, it's more than you could hope for.
