College Inn has Great food. John has done such a great job making ZYDECO live in New Orleans and the dinner before the dance is wonderful. check it out yall.
A Neighborhood Institution. This place is a classic option for a Saturday night out, you can't go wrong. When they re-opened post-K it seemed like the whole city was there to welcome them back! The crowd is mostly local. The best is when they have live rockabilly music, if you like to people-watch, you'll be staring in amazement at the dancers geared up in 50's pompadours and poodle skirts. There's a sort of 'alternative' vibe here that I really appreciate. It's a friendly place with good service and cheap drinks, and always great music. Sometimes the cover charge can be high here which is the only [albeit minor] thing I can think of that I don't love about Rock N Bowl.
One of the coolest places in the world. This place is like paradise... lanes and lanes of vintage alleys and rockin' bands to make you bowl like a pro. Actually, I think the lanes were a little crooked, but who cares, esp after some drinks and dancing. Locals were in there for the zydeco band gliding around like ballroom champions - it was a surreal and amazing experience!
A great surprise. Unique! Difficult to wipe the smile off your face after spending a few minutes in here. A heady mixture of singles bar, dancing couples, incessant and oh-so-catchy zydeco beat, and the background clatter of the occasional strike.
Best night out in New Orleans!. I've lived here for 3 years and this was the most fun I've had yet! I wasn't planning on bowling, I just wanted to see Sonny Landreth, Kenny NEal, Anders Osborne and Eddie Bo on the same show. It blew my mind. THIS is what New Orleans is all about! After throwing back a few beers with my friends and making a fool of myself on the dance floor, I decided to make a fool of myself bowling, too. It was so much fun, we stayed till the end. Hoola hoops were thrown out to the crowd by the bartenders, everyone was taking a turn hoola hooping. It was hysterical- the entire staff was on the bar. It must have been the owner that got up there and danced with them. I guess it was around 3am when we left. I could have stayed all night!!
Bowl a few frames or dance to the music--or do both..
The Scene
This unlikely music venue attracts all kinds. Locals of all ages come to Cajun two-step on the large, wooden dance floor. Tourists generally stand at the protruding half-circle bar eyeing the dancers. Some patrons just come to bowl with great background music, not the usual repetitious drone heard in more traditional alleys. Rock 'N' Bowl focuses on regional roots styles, from Cajun and zydeco to swing and rockabilly.
The Draw
Don't expect high-tech bowling that keeps score for you; this is an old score-sheet-and-pencil kind of alley. A downstairs performance space, cheekily named Bowl Me Under, hosts special events and local acts during busy times such as Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest. Patrons pony up a pay-one-price cover for unlimited back-and-forth access to both the alley and the hall below.
It's Best to Go When There's Zydeco!. After numerous trips to New Orleans, I FINALLY made it to the much-touted Rock N Bowl. Thursday nights are Zydeco Night, and the place was definitely rocking. People of all ages and all backgrounds were kicking up their heels together. The energy was unbelievable! We also went the following night, which featured a bluesy band, but it was much quieter then. As for the actual bowling, the lanes and equipment are really antiquated, but you'll still have a good time.
Fun, fun, fun. laid back, fun, good atmosphere with a great amount of good local music. Dance the night away!
Fun Starts here. This is just the most unique and fun place in town. Great food, drinks, entertainment, and activities. You can bowl, dance or play pinball! bring friends or just meet the crowd, very friendly as well.
Nothing else like it. Other bowling alleys around the country may refer to their "rock 'n bowl" specialty nights or whatever, but I doubt any could even come close to the charm and wonder of Mid-City Lanes'. While the other places are blaring piped in music and trying to hype up the atmosphere with lasers, fog machines and black lights, this spot is rocking with real party music -- live zydeco, Latin, blues, funk or covers everyone loves. You can feel the floor move beneath your feet while every one around you dances and drinks. The bowling and eats are good, too.
