Editorial Review for Emeril's Delmonico – by Pableaux Johnson
The Scene
When Emeril Lagasse revived this staid eatery--his third in town--he gave the old steakhouse a facelift (bamboo wall coverings upstairs, grand piano in the bar) while maintaining the original's Old-World polish. Loyalists flock here for scene and cuisine. Professional but sometimes fickle servers know how to spot and play to big spenders.
The Food
Lagasse's trademark eclectic style is definitely the draw here, with a bit of homage to Delmonico tradition. Expect layer upon layer of powerful flavor--spicy chorizo sausage with robust Worcestershire, earthy roast duck with scallion-cheese grits--along with straight-ahead steakhouse favorites. The dry-aged rib-eye is a simple standout--perfectly seared and nearly fork-tender. The high-traffic kitchen can have its missteps, such as broken cream sauces on mushroom cannelloni. Tableside baked Alaska is heavier on flash than flavor; the nutty double-chocolate pie packs more punch for a more fulfilling finish.

Insider Tips
Look GoodThe restaurant's old-school setting makes for a less-flexible dress code, so err on the formal side.
Know Before You GoImpulse diners shouldn't bank on an easy walk-in. Reservations can be tough to get, so call at least a week ahead to ensure a seating.
ParkingOn-street parking isn't impossible to come by, but spare yourself the aggravation and use the restaurant's convenient and complimentary curbside valet service.

I’ve always heard that Emeril’s restaurants were overpriced and served mediocre food at best and Delmonico certainly proved it. The bread that was served before the meal was only lukewarm and the butter was nearly frozen. I would at least expect the bread to be hot and have soft butter that we can actually cut with a knife. Our entrees were mediocre, but certainly not worth $180 for 4 entrees alone. I could have gotten a better piece of fish at Danny & Clyde’s restaurant and gas station. Our waiter was an intimidating French guy who kept bugging us by asking if everything was good. Let me explain, I don’t normally mind if a waiter asks us 3+ times if our food is good. However, we were all engaged in a conversation and he came over 3 times and would repeatedly ask us if our food was good in a loud and demanding voice. The third time he came over, he said “it’s good? It’s good? It’s good?” until we responded with “YES! It’s fine!” And then our conversation topic changed to “I wish he would stop asking us that.” Overall, it was a disappointing experience.

Still waiting for my favorite restaurant to re-open Post K. Last visit there was simply remarkable. Had a chefs table dinner, with a different wine for each course couldn't have been better in any way. Service was impeccable. Maybe it was a slow night, but the chef seemed to be showing off his talents. We actually had to call a halt to the courses, couldn't eat one more bite - then the desserts came. Wow, probably the best overall meal of our lives. Even for the price ($150 per person including tax, tip, wine) I couldn't recommend more. Try it when they come back to life next year.
Pros: Food, food, food, service, wine
Cons: None
