Editorial Review for St. Joe's – by Kevin Forest Moreau
In Short
The folk-art crosses that hang from St. Joe's ceiling are the bar's central conversation piece. Along with the church-pew seats at the pool table and other knick-knacks, they contribute to a funky ambience reminiscent of a Madonna garage sale. It's got a cobbled-together, kitschy pop-cultural vibe. Venture through a small storage room to the outdoor patio, which sports an intimate feel all its own, thanks to votive candles, hanging, Asian-style lamps and a bird of paradise. The back bar provides a welcome respite from the crush of bodies along the narrow space by the main bar. The CD jukebox offers some decent surprises, though it leans too heavily toward swing. The crowd includes neighborhood folks, off-the-street eccentrics, college students, young professionals and working stiffs.

The editorial review is spot-on. And echoing the previous user review, this place is a bit tricky to characterize: at times it can be divey, college-crowded, low key, neighborhood crowd, or all of the above. They make a great mojito, and they have various flavored versions. The decor is unbeatable, particularly the mosaic of glass in the ladies room! They have a dark mellow atmosphere and the crowd is diverse. Good place to start or end the night. They have a great patio in the back, and a pool table. Good jukebox too. If you like this place, another great neighborhood bar is the Kingpin, nearby on Lyons and Prytania.
Pros: good mojitos, mixed crowd

St. Joe's is perfect for hanging out, especially when I have friends in from out of town -- it's dimly lit and casual, but not divey, and the crowd is fairly friendly and calm. It's just a very comfortable (atmosphere-wise, as the bar can get pretty crowded) place to hang out, especially since they re-did the back patio (love those Asian lanterns).
