Armstrong Park jewel that hosts fans of culture and Carnival, in the spirit of its great namesake..
In Short
This venue, located just outside the French Quarter and named for famous New Orleans gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, is an old but still-viable player on the city's performing arts scene: The New Orleans Opera Association calls the theater home during its production season, and national dance troupes presented by the New Orleans Ballet Association leap across the stage on a regular basis. The theater also hosts Mardi Gras balls and other special events for some of the city's oldest Carnival krewes. Fittingly, the Theatre of the Performing Arts' classic look--plush red seats and chandeliers overhead--makes every event an occasion.
